DATA TECHNICIAN

 

UNAVCO, a Colorado based company, is a non-profit membership-governed consortium funded through the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). UNAVCO's mission is to support and promote high-precision measurement techniques for the advancement of Earth Sciences.

 

UNAVCO invites applications for the part-time position of DATA TECHNICIAN to work at our UNAVCO office in Boulder, Colorado.  This individual will work as part of a team to oversee data flow for the Plate Boundary Observatory (PBO), from download and quality control through archiving.  There may be opportunities to work on small development projects for particularly capable and/or motivated individuals.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

· Configure GPS receivers for high-rate downloads, collect high-rate data, and ensure collection is complete.

· Retrieve and archive manually downloaded data.

· Ensure all downloaded GPS data files pass through the QC process, troubleshooting and remedying any problems that occur.

· Remotely configure GPS stations for real-time data streaming and manage data streams from the PBO real-time network.

· Assist with the archiving of borehole strainmeter data.

· Create entries in the PBO database for new stations in the network and update metadata as required for existing stations.

· Develop dynamic time series plotting for the PBO website using open-source graphics tools.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

· Bachelor’s degree (completed or in progress) in computer science, physical science or engineering. 

· Some programming work experience is a plus.

· Alternatively, three years experience working with geophysical data sets including dataflow and data quality assessment. 

· Working knowledge of computer operating systems including UNIX (Solaris) and Linux (SuSE) systems. 

· Working knowledge of UNIX shell-script programming and practices.

· Outstanding attention to detail.

· Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 

· Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with peers and supervisors.

· Good problem-solving and organization skills.

· Good written and oral communication skills in English.

· Ability to work collegially with a variety of groups: software engineers, field engineers, archivists and members of the scientific community

· Working knowledge of Python programming is preferred.

· Working knowledge of current web software tools including HTML, XML and PHP is preferred.

· Interest in geophysics or earth science is preferred.
