Job Title: Director Database Platform and System Engineering
Location: Mt. Laurel, NJ
Job Description:
The Engineering organization, which is part of the Core Engineering team, is responsible for the design and development of the system infrastructure items that are key contributors to the reliability, availability, and operations of the CBS systems:Database Technology. This includes the design and creation of the DB (e.g., Oracle) to support key system features and DB reliability and availability features such as backup/restore and monitoring.Operating System and Platform Technology. This includes the definition of the operating system (e.g., AIX, Linux), clustering technology (e.g., HACMP, Veritas) and hardware platforms (e.g., EMC disk subsystems, rack mount servers, etc.) that are needed for the CBS system. Network Design. A reliable and high performance network is key to the success of the CBS system. The initial network design is done by the Engineering team.System Installation. This includes the design and creation of the packages required to install the various CBS system component including those provided by third party vendors. The Engineering team is the focal point for the consolidation of the numerous components that comprise the CBS system. While the Engineering team is not responsible for developing all of the components that are in a CBS system, it is responsible for ensuring that all of the components are packaged and matched with the correct hardware platform (e.g., AIX, Linux) and third party packages.
Another important responsibility of the Engineering team is the creation and maintenance of the CBS build environment.
The candidate should have a proven track record of developing and deploying products. This position is a “hands-on” position in that the candidate will be expected to have subject matter expertise in several of the areas listed above and should be able to counsel team members on key design and development directions. The candidate will be expected to work with team members to plan and deliver on project schedules. In addition, the candidate will need to work with other development teams, Product Management, PQA teams, and others to ensure that the needs of the project are met.
Some travel may be required (to development sites).
Job Requirements:
The candidate should have experience in the following areas:Development Management Experience. The candidate should have at least 8 years of experience in managing large and complex projects. The assignment involves working with other teams that are located around the world (e.g., US, Israel, France, India) and involve numerous system components (i.e., over 20).Vendor Managements Experience. Third party products are a key part of the CBS system. The candidate should have experience working with external service and hardware providers to negotiate deliverables and statements of works (SOW). This will include work with internal Comverse organizations and external third party providers.Operating System Knowledge. The Engineering assignment requires the candidate to have a working knowledge in several operating systems (e.g., AIX, Solaris, Linux, Windows). In addition, a familiarity with hardware configurations (e.g., disk subsystems, space/power requirements, etc.) is a plus.High Availability experience. High Availability and Reliability are keys to the success of the CBS system. The candidate should have experience in the design and/or architecture of highly available systems (e.g., Telco switching system) or high availability solutions (e.g., clustering). Project Management. The candidate should have demonstrated the skills to direct a team of various disciplines across diverse geographies. Billing (Real-Time and/or Post-Paid). It would be a plus for the candidate to have experience with a Billing system and its various components.Configuration Management knowledge. The candidate should have a working knowledge of configuration management processes required for large projects and the tools associated with them (e.g., Clearcase, Clearquest, CVS, etc.).
Desired Skills:
Negotiation skills. A key to the success of the Engineering assignment is for the candidate to work with various organizations with differing priorities. The candidate needs to understand the differences and work with others to arrive at a mutually understood solution that meets the needs of CBS and its customer base.
