Engineering Project Manager
Job summary
The role of the Engineering Project Manager is to plan, executive, and finalize software development projects according to strict deadlines and within budget. Responsibilities include coordinating the efforts of software engineers, SQA engineers, and technical writers in order to deliver projects according to plan. The Engineering Project Manager will also define the project’s objectives and oversee quality control throughout its life cycle. The Engineering Project Manager will also be responsible for setting up and managing project schedules in the OpenAir project management tool as the way to provide Corporate Finance adequate and timely project data (actual and projected) for all efforts involved with percent complete revenue recognition.
Summary of essential job functions
· Direct and manage software project development from beginning to end. Define project scope, goals and deliverables that support business goals. Define project success criteria. Estimate the resources and participants needed to achieve project goals. Coordinate with project stakeholders and sponsor to ensure appropriate resources.
· Develop full-scale projects plans. Plan and schedule project timelines and milestones using Microsoft Project Plan (MPP) files. Setup/configure OpenAir project management software to accurately reflect project plans. Tasks may include Billing Milestones and any customer deliverables called out in the project.
· Identify and manage project dependencies and critical path. Identify and resolve issues and risks associated with the project and devise contingency plans. Delegate tasks and responsibilities to appropriate personnel. Proactively manage changes in project scope.
· Work with Software Engineering Managers to track project milestones/deliverables and perform project maintenance tasks on a regular (i.e. weekly/monthly/quarterly) basis. Develop and deliver project reports. Update/maintain Open Air project schedules accordingly
· Review revenue to quarterly and annual projection plans for individual and combined projects. Work with Software Engineering Managers to confirm billing milestones are accurate in OpenAir and adjust where necessary. Run "revenue recognition" within OpenAir on all relevant projects.
· Work with Finance to verify all revenue elements (whether should be taken, adjusted, or deferred). Work with Finance and report project hours (actual and projected) to Finance on a regular (i.e. monthly/quarterly) basis
· Conduct project post mortems and create recommendations for best practices and tools related to project execution and management.
Minimum requirements
· Strong educational background: minimum BA/BS degree with some focus on the tenants of project management. MBA or MS is a plus
· 4 - 7 years experience in software development project management driven environment, preferably within a Software Engineering group and/or in a high-tech/technology-driven environment, at least 2-3 years of hands-on software development project management experience
· Excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to work with technical individuals
· Advanced software skills with software tools such as MS Project, Primavera or other project management applications
· A strong working knowledge of MS Office software applications (Excel, Word & PowerPoint)
· Prior experience with OpenAir a plus
· Ability to understand and work with the relationships between project plans, schedules and projections as they apply to real-world project influences
· Committed, detail oriented, self-starter with strong problem solving and interpersonal skills
