GIS Technician

We currently have an opportunity for a GIS Technician.  This position is responsible for using ESRI with the NISC Visual Utility Mapping System to produce maps for utility distribution cooperatives. The position also is responsible for data quality on mapping projects and must ensure the specifications of the Member’s requests have been fully met.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Works with engineering digital and/or paper resources to layout and draft landbase and utility facilities with NISC’s GIS Mapping System. Analyze and problem solve system connectivity issues.Generate utility engineering models with NISC custom engineering export routines from MapEdit.Coordinate with Engineers to solve simple to moderate distribution system layout discrepancies.Review all maps for compliance with appropriate connectivity model.Interacts with the customer to understand their expectations, collect information regarding their maps and systems.Reviews and corrects distribution system after transformation and conversions are made from other GIS system.Performs other mapping duties such as rubber sheeting, multiple point insertion, and edge matching.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Advanced knowledge of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, methods, theories and techniques.Working knowledge of cartography skills to operate CAD or GIS systems effectively. Working knowledge of industry system layout, including construction units.Working knowledge of ESRI ArcMAP with basic knowledge of SDE.Working knowledge of spatial and attribute data manipulation.Working knowledge of NISC’s E&O data model.Working knowledge of CIS/GIS data relationships. Working knowledge of NISC E&O applications.Working knowledge of land-based coordinate systems. Working knowledge of electrical/tele distribution models. Working knowledge of GIS related geometric networks.Excellent PC skills, including Word, Excel and Access.Excellent problem solving skills with a strong attention to detail. Ability to organize and prioritize.Ability to interact in a positive manner with internal and external contacts.Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment. Education and Experience:

 

Two-years of education in engineering-related field or comparable experience.

 

Generally requires three to five years of experience in Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, methods, theories and techniques to include AutoCAD, ESRI ArcMAP or other mapping systems in the utility industry.
