   JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Programmer I DEPARTMENT: Information Services – Individual Team

REPORTS TO:Supervisor, Manager or Director

 

 

SUMMARY:

Under general direction, researches and designs primary computer applications. Develops and maintains complex computer programs and systems. 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  

1.Researches, designs, writes, modifies, tests, debugs, implements and documents

computer programs and jobs to satisfy customer requirements. Maintains current status information

on user service request tracking system.

 

2.  Identifies and resolves problems with computer applications programs and/or 

computer jobs presented in phone calls from users during the day, and is responsible for on-call duty

during non-business hours. Maintains information on problem tracking system.

 

3.  Analyzes customer requirements from user service requests and designs

applications systems. May develop technical specifications.

 

4.  Other duties as assigned.   

 

REQUIREMENTS:

· Bachelors degree in Computer Science or Computer Programming, or equivalent combination of post-secondary education and experience.

· Minimum 3 years on-the-job programming and analysis experience.

· Expertise in:  COBOL, JCL, VSAM required.

· Experience in: CICS, Natural, ADABAS a plus.

·  Working knowledge of health insurance business and functions preferred.

·  Working knowledge of systems analysis, design and development.

·  Experience with at least one of the Company's primary applications.

·  Excellent analytical, project and time management, problem solving, interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.

·  Self-motivation with the ability to work independently.

· Availability to take after-hours problem calls and report back to work as needed.

· Ability to perform activities requiring sustained concentration.

· Ability to see and to read computer screens and printed material.

· May be required to travel overnight or appear in court on behalf of the Company.

 

PROBLEM SOLVING:

Translates customer requirements into system specifications and programmed solutions. Identifies source of applications systems problems and develops solutions. Recommends systems or procedural changes to prevent future problems or simplify recovery. Recommends enhancements to improve applications systems efficiency and effectiveness.

 

DIRECTION PROVIDED:

Provides users with testing guidance and application instruction. Provides technical assistance to Programmer II.
