A successful hedge fund with a strong track record over the last 15 years is seeking Software Engineers to join their office in Irvine, California. The firm is well-capitalized with a small group of 20 employees working in a collaborative team-oriented environment. Because of the company’s culture and small size, a premium is placed on independent, self-motivated people who excel in their field of expertise and demonstrate an interest in learning new technologies.

 

Position Summary

 

We are looking for talented software engineers to support our quantitative trading system.  Several different positions and project areas are available.  We expect candidates for all areas to be highly-skilled programmers who are motivated towards attention to detail and can work effectively with other software developers within our small company environment.  Strong problem-solving skills are a prerequisite along with an ability to work efficiently and prioritize effectively.  For this position we generally prefer candidates with experience in commercial software development environments; however, we evaluate candidates on an individual basis and will take into consideration all related experience, skills, and accomplishments.

 

Software Engineers at our company may work in a number of different areas, depending on current need and individual background and interest. Some of these areas are listed below.  We expect that most Software Engineers would have the flexibility and skills to contribute in more than one area.

 Parsing, processing, and analyzing large financial data sets.Development and maintenance of high-performance multi-threaded real-time trading and data feed platformDevelopment and maintenance of automated back-office and accounting systemsSystems programming work to build and maintain complex software and hardware systems, including identification of bottlenecks and optimization of performanceDevelopment and design of monitoring tools, including user interfaces, to analyze data from all aspects of our existing systemAnalytical work to develop and implement mathematical algorithms for modeling financial data

 

Skills and Requirements

 

We are interested in candidates with skills in the areas listed below.  While candidates do not have to meet all of the requirements, we expect successful candidates to meet a number of the criteria listed:

 Experience with designing, developing, testing, and maintaining large software systems written in programming languages such as Fortran, C/C++, and/or Java  with a high level attention to quality control.Experience writing programs to parse, process, and/or analyze large data sets.Experience developing high-performance multi-threaded or shared memory systems.Experience with multiple operating systems especially Linux and OpenVMS.Experience porting software and applications between different languages and operating systems (especially involving Fortran and OpenVMS).Experience working extensively with or possibly administering SQL databases such as Oracle.Experience with dynamic website development and/or experience developing user interfaces.Skilled systems-level programmers and hackers.Experience with scripting languages such as shell scripts, perl, python, etc.Experience supporting real-time production-critical systems.

 

Education

 

We prefer candidates with a BS/MS degree or higher (in computer science, engineering, mathematics, the physical sciences or related technical field) and a strong academic record.   We request that prospective candidates, especially those with less work experience, include as much academic information as possible in their correspondence material such as GPA and relevant test scores.

 

Compensation

 

In addition to base salary, a substantial component of total compensation may be tied to annual bonuses that reflect individual performance as well as performance of the company as a whole.  Initial compensation is likely to be in the range of $125k – $300k per year.
