Akamai Technologies is looking for enthusiastic software engineers to join our small, close-knit P2P team, with the modest goal of scaling our client network to span every desktop in the world. Though the goal may sound audacious, if there's anybody who can do it, it's us. The Company: Akamai is the market leader in the CDN space and hosts 10-20% of all web content, globally. At our peak we can serve over 3.7M HTTP requests and 300 Gigabits *per second*. Virtually every user on the web uses us many times a day, without even realizing it. The Team: Our P2P team is responsible for designing, implementing, and deploying a worldwide network of client-side download accelerators, integrated broadly throughout the entire Akamai suite. Our goal is to deploy this client on millions of desktops around the world to provide faster, less expensive, and more powerful downloading experiences. When complete, it will truly be a revolutionary advance in data delivery, powering everything from IPTV to software updates from your PC to your settop box. The Role: We are looking for a person who is generally of an intellectually-curious and passionate mindset -- the sort of person who has probably forgotten a dozen different languages, has experience strewn across all the major platforms, and who is endlessly challenging the status quo at work and in their personal lives. The ideal candidate has worked on the client, on the server, and everywhere in between. This person has a solid understanding of technology, but can also communicate, prioritize and create successes through hard work and a little bit of luck. At Akamai you will coordinate closely with the rest of the team, developing both client and server techonlogy across Linux, Mac, and Windows. You will work on many aspects of the technology, including the core P2P downloading algorithms, as well as the vast infrastructure that supports it. You'll have at your fingertips all the extensive resources at our disposal, spanning thousands of datacenters and tens of thousands of servers (hundreds of which are devoted exclusively to us), with your technology deployed on millions of desktops. Skills required: We are particularly interested in candidates who have extensive, recent experience with: Pragmatic C++ (not crazy template metaprogramming, just the tried-and-true basics) Low-level networking (writing and parsing your own messages, socket-level) Linux expertise (you are the person that everybody answers tricky Linux problems) Experience working on the client, on the server, and everywhere in between We are looking for a person will thrive in a dynamic, collaborative, and nimble environment.
