TWACS NG Software Development Manager

Aclara (formerly DCSI), a subsidiary of ESCO Technologies Inc., has an immediate opening for a Software Development Manager at its St. Louis, MO headquarters. We are looking for an expereinced Software Development Manager for a complex, distributed, 24x7, commercial system software product hosted on the J2EE platform. This is a technical management position with supervisory responsibilities for a team of roughly 20 J2EE Developers. Advises the management team on improvements to process and ensure Developers maintain appropriate discipline in implementing new and existing software processes.  • Ensure that appropriate development staff are hired, trained and assigned according to their skill sets.
• Mentor new staff, assist existing staff with career development and ensure that proper tools and domain training are provided.
• Monitor and evaluate staff performance through yearly performance evaluations.
• Assist project management with estimating workload and schedules for technical completion.
• Manages the team members and structures the team's task for efficiency and effectiveness.
• Work with the management team to formulate and improve specific, repeatable development processes and standards that ensure product quality and development productivity
• Ensure all developers are educated in development process and best practices and monitor their adherence thereto.
• J2EE design and development including developmental testing, coding, debugging and documentation.
• Mapping Use Cases into design specifications applying UML, patterns, best practices, etc.
• Understand the business logic of a very complex domain.
• Communicates as needed with the Project Manager, other Senior Developers, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and Solution Architects to provide updates on progress, implementation issues and status.
• Escalates issues in a timely manner and provides mitigation recommendations to the Project Manager.
• Identifies resource needs and communicates them to the Director and Project Manager.


• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
• 5 - 8 years development experience; an advanced degree will be considered as equivalent to 3 years experience.
• Minimum of 2 years experience as a supervisor of at least 10 technical staff members with a proven track record of employee retention and motivation.
• Proficient developing for the J2EE platform, especially with EJB, JMS and/or transactions.
• Experience on at least 2 full project life cycles.
• Experience with a variety of architecture/design patterns and idioms, especially J2EE patterns.
• Understanding of the J2EE deployment model (e.g., EAR, WAR, JAR, etc.).
• Good understanding of data structures and the Java Collections framework required.
• Database and JDBC/SQL expertise.
• Understanding of persistence frameworks - O/R mappers (Hibernate, TopLink, EJB 3), DAOs, Entity Beans.
• Firm understanding of Object-Oriented methodologies.
• Proficient in UML, RUP and Rational tools.
• Excellent time management skills, including multi-tasking and prioritization.
• Excellent analytical skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including mentoring and performance feedback.
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
• Exposure to a broad range of development tools and methodologies.
• Commercial software development experience a plus.
• Advanced algorithms and data structures knowledge a plus.
• Distributed systems experience a plus.
• Real-time or telecommunications software experience a plus.
