Window Services Administrator - 4648

POSITION SUMMARY:
We need an experienced Windows systems administrator with proven skills and experience deploying and maintaining Microsoft server and desktop systems in a mixed platform IT environment. Desirable candidates will have:

•Mastery of Microsoft Software Installer (msi) concepts and packaging tools like Installshield AdminStudio.
•Thorough understanding of Active Directory, Group Policy, and Microsoft security best practices.
•Experience maintaining production Windows servers used in intranet- and Internet-facing configurations.
•Excellent diagnostic / trouble-shooting skills for dealing with server as well as complex user problems.


Education/Training:
BS in Computer Science, Information Science, Information Technology with three years experience;  MS in Computer Science, Information Science, Information Technology with one year experience; or PhD in Computer Science, Information Science, Information Technology; candidates with a BS degree in other technical fields (e.g., engineering) will be considered as well if they have relevant work experience.

Experience:
Three or more years of experience as a systems administrator in a high-availability production environment; at least 12 contiguous months served in the same organization. Experience using one or more Windows packaging tools (e.g. Installshield AdminStudio, Wise Package Studio) and a working knowledge of Windows Installer related technologies. Experience contributing to the operation and evolution of a secure managed Windows desktop environment. Experience analyzing and addressing the issues common to the deployment and continued operation of desktop and server systems in a production environment is essential.

Skills/Abilities:
•understanding of Windows technologies (e.g. Active Directory, DFS, Group Policy) required to perform basic administrative duties
•administration and troubleshooting skills for one or more of the following:
o  System Center Operations Manager (SCOM / MOM)
o  System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM/ SMS)
o  SharePoint and related technologies (IIS, Forefront)
o  SQL Server
•an understanding of TCP/IP and other network protocols used by Windows
•working knowledge of at least one Windows scripting language (e.g. VBScript, PowerShell, etc)
•proven ability to use Windows packaging tools (e.g. Installshield AdminStudio, Wise Package Studio) to customize or create packages for deployment in the enterprise
•an understanding of the use of least-privileged user accounts and how it affects users and administrators in a Windows environment


Mobility: Some business travel required; may have to travel to other campus locations; travel to customer sites. Computer hardware installation and configuration required on a regular basis, sometimes involving transport of heavy objects (typically under 100 lbs.) short distances, use of hand tools, et cetera. Carrying of light objects (< 20 lbs.) for longer distances (intra-campus; 2-3 city blocks) may also be required.

Environmental Conditions: Work in an office setting for extended periods; periodic work in a computer machine room environment.

Mental:  Desire to work in an academic environment where peer-review is the norm; ability to interact effectively with others of varying technical competency: vendors, managers, and other technical research staff; ability to prioritize projects/tasks; self-motivated with a strong learning capability; ability to coordinate work effectively with others. Good technical problem-solving skills. Strong information and project organization skills as well as good oral and written communication skills are required.

Other: Evening/weekend hours may be required in order to perform service outside of normal operating hours. There is a rotating on-call component to this position. Candidate must be able to respond to outage events in the main facility in Pittsburgh, PA (Oakland) in a reasonable time (e.g. within 30 minutes).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
-Providing technical guidance to front-line support and other IT staff in resolving issues

-Maintenance of Internet-facing and internal services and applications

-Software evaluation and packaging for enterprise distribution

-Documentation (e.g., admin procedures, SLAs, et cetera)

-Maintaining awareness of evolving trends and techniques in the Microsoft services realm
