Asphalt Paving Superintendent / Foreman

Job Overview

To supervise an asphalt paving crew working on streets, parking lots, tennis courts and other projects for a Class A VDOT Prequalified private company located in Roanoke, Virginia that has been in business since 1945. See www.srdraperpaving.com for further company information.

 

PreferencesThree or more years experience supervising a paving crew Commercial Drivers License Certified or ability to become certified with Virginia Department of Transportation

Knowledge: Building and Construction - Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction of parking lots, highways and roads.

Skills: Coordination - Adjusting actions in relation to others' actions. Management of Personnel Resources - Motivating, developing, and directing people as they work, identifying the best people for the job. Time Management - Managing one's own time and the time of others. Instructing - Teaching others how to do something. Judgment and Decision Making - Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.

Abilities: Oral Expression - The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand. Problem Sensitivity - The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong Oral Comprehension - The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. Deductive Reasoning - The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense. Near Vision - The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer). Written Comprehension - The ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.

 

Tasks and Activities

Occupation Specific Tasks: Analyze worker and production problems and recommend solutions, such as improving production methods or implementing motivational plans. Arrange for repairs of equipment and machinery. Assign work to employees, based on material and worker requirements of specific jobs. Confer with managerial and technical personnel, other departments, and contractors in order to resolve problems and to coordinate activities. Coordinate work activities with other construction project activities. Estimate material and worker requirements to complete jobs. Examine and inspect work progress, equipment, and construction sites to verify safety and to ensure that specifications are met. Locate, measure, and mark site locations and placement of structures and equipment, using measuring and marking equipment. Order or requisition materials and supplies. Provide assistance to workers engaged in construction activities, using hand tools and equipment. Read specifications such as blueprints to determine construction requirements and to plan procedures. Record information such as personnel, production, and operational data on specified forms and reports. Suggest or initiate personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, and hires. Supervise, coordinate, and schedule the activities of construction workers. Train workers in construction methods, operation of equipment, safety procedures, and company policies.

Getting Information - Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources. Monitor Processes, Materials, or Surroundings - Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems. Communicating with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates - Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, or in person. Guiding, Directing, and Motivating Subordinates - Providing guidance and direction to subordinates, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance. Inspecting Equipment, Structures, or Material - Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
