Boiler Operator

Position Description
Operates a steam generation plant containing 4 oil-fired 800 horsepower boilers producing 50 psi. steam on a 24 hour per day- 365 day per year basis. Duty includes eight hour work shifts at the plant on a rotating basis (day, swing and mids). The boiler tender must be able to tend one or more boilers to produce steam to be supplied to a steam utility to heat and supply hot water to a variety of military facilities. Tasks include, but are not limited to, firing and shutting down boilers; observing and interpreting readings on gauges, meters, and charts relating to various aspects of steam plant operation; assisting in the fueling of the plant; and, performing rounds to monitor the operation of the plant. The boiler tender must be able to make adjustments to controls to: meet changing demands for steam; insure safety; and, to maximize fuel efficiency. Other tasks include maintaining log(s) to record data pertinent to plant and equipment operations and performing operational maintenance including cleaning, lubrication inspection, and performance of minor repairs of the plant and associated equipment. The boiler tender analyzes chemistry of make up, condensate return, and boiler water and treats the water with chemicals based upon the results of the analysis.
The Central Heating Plant (CHP) serves as a dispatch and communication center for KSS for periods outside of normal operating hours and on holidays and weekends. Collateral duties include making contact with on-call crews, providing welfare checks, checking out keys to KSS personnel, assisting with confined space entry logs, burn permits, and coordinating clearances to enter airport controlled areas. The boiler tender on duty also assists with communications and dispatch during off-hour emergencies.

Position Requirements
• Power Boiler Operator’s License-Second Class (State of Alaska)
• Five years experience as a Boiler Tender at a similar facility with sufficient relevant experience to be designated as an operator by the Coast Guard
• Valid Alaska Driver’s License
• Must be able to clearly communicate (orally and written) in the English language
• Must be able to clearly communicate by radio
• Must have good documentation and organizational skills
• Must be familiar with Microsoft programs
