Director, Employee Relations
Position Summary:The Director, Employee Relations (DER), reports to the regional Vice President, Human Resources for the Pacific Region. The DER directs and oversees the Region’s labor/employee relations programs, policies and procedures. The individual establishes and maintains positive labor-management relations, collaboratively develops strategy, negotiates union contracts, interprets and administers collective bargaining agreements and grievance procedures including presenting cases at hearings and preparing briefs; provides advice and guidance on the application of federal and state legislation; represents the Company in dealing with government agencies, assists all levels of management on labor and employment matters and acts as a mentor and advisor to members of the Human Resources Management team. The DER serves all business divisions and units within the Pacific region, and works with and through the Corporate Human Resources Staff for U.S. Operations. The DER has daily contact with operations managers, Pacific Region HR Vice President, and regular contact with in-house and outside legal counsel. Essential Duties / Responsibilities: Formulate and recommend program goals and objectives in all areas of labor/employee relations. Assure that the company is in compliance with the National Labor Relations Act as well as State employment laws where appropriate. Investigate problems such as working conditions, disciplinary actions, employee and applicant appeals and grievances and provide subsequent guidance and recommendations for problem resolution to the management team and employees in both union and non-union environments. Participate in the development and administration of the operating budget for the employee/labor relations functions, assuring that the Region’s function operates with fiscal responsibility. Lead union contract negotiations. Plan, coordinate and direct the work of HR staff members engaged in the various employee/labor relations activities. The DER will have excellent writing skills, as well as listening, public speaking and presentation skills. Expert knowledge of the National Labor Relations Act and other relevant state and federal employment and labor laws is necessary. The person will have a good understanding of basic math concepts and aptitude for comparative analysis. Experience with e-mail, word processing and office software is essential. Advanced understanding of employee relations issues is essential. Bachelor’s degree in business, industrial relations, human resource management preferred, and 7-10 years experience in industrial employee/labor relations. Travel Expectations: 50% travel is anticipated.
