Sims Metal Management has over 80 sites in the U.S. and Canada with over 4500 employees.EH&S MANAGER/ADMINISTRATOR SUMMARY:The Environmental Health & Saftey Administrator is responsible for supporting the Director, EH&S in directing compliance with the Company?s policies, objectives and implementation strategies involving matters of regulatory compliance and government relations to meet the Company?s goal of striving for compliance with environmental and safety obligations on the Federal, State, County and local level. PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES: Maintain a working knowledge and awareness of all Federal, State, County and Local laws, ordinances, orders, rules, regulations, and guidelines related to the EHS aspects of NE Operating facilities. Conduct routine inspections of all NE operating facilities, prepare report of inspections with any recommendations for corrective measures and disseminate to appropriate managers. Perform follow-up of reported inspections and recommendations. Preparation of applications and/or renewals for environmental licenses and permits, as requested. Practice good public relations at all times, bother over the telephone as well as during face-to-face contacts. Enforce the Company?s EH&S policies at all facilities by working through line management. This is particularly important when disciplining employees, so that employees understand that line management is committed to EH&S principles and rules. Develop or update training programs as requested by the Regional EH&S Director or by line management. Develop/update Company policies, procedures or work instructions, as requested by the Regional EH&S Director. Participate in training sessions as requested by the Regional EH&S Manager. Facility EH&S Managers may be designated as the primary SHEC point of contact for a facility. For those facilities, the Facility EHS Manager shall have the following responsibilities for those facilities: Coach facility management and facility staff to encourage effective SHEC management. This should include providing help/advise to line management on how to conduct: i. Weekly toolbox talks, ii. Weekly inspection checklists, iii. Observational behavior audits, iv. Job Evaluation/Risk Assessments, and v. Safety committee Be available by phone in the event of an emergency. Communicate facility SHEC performance through conversations, signage and bulletin boards. Assist the facility?s Plant Manager with SHEC files and records maintenance. Conduct the EH&S Department training classes for the facility (generally one per month), and coach facility management in conducting their toolbox talks. Remember, supervisors are asked to conduct toolbox talks to: (A) help them show commitment to SHEC and (B) develop the supervisor?s understanding of SHEC principles by them being the ?teacher? for the subject. Monitor the status of all permits for the facility, and ensure that renewals are applied for and obtained in a timely fashion. Conduct site inspections at assigned facilities, as agreed upon with the Regional EH&S Manager and/or facility management. At least one inspection each month shall be conducted with a member of facility management team. Give a monthly score to the facility using forms developed by the EH&S Department. Track all ?to do? items until they are completed. Receive copies of all Incident Reports and Incident Investigation Reports from facility management (it should have already been faxed to EHS Department). Follow-up with line management to ensure that they are communicating with any employee who goes to the doctor, is on modified duty or misses workdays. Conduct all recordkeeping for the facility?s metric. This paperwork (inspection results and training sign-in sheets) shall be sent to the EHS Main Office or updated on the EH&S Web-Page within 48-hours. Review the results of all internal and external audits conducted for the facility with facility management and the EH&S Team at regularly scheduled staff meeting. Work with facility management to ensure that all projects planned at the facility receive an EH&S review prior to initiating the project. Take the lead on EH&S projects at the facility, upon request by the Regional EH&S Manager. Make suggestions on how to improve the SHEC management program. Take the lead in the event of a surprise agency inspection, after notifying the Regional EH&S Manager and other appropriate managers. Notify the Regional EH&S Manager, line management and other appropriate managers when a major risk is identified and/or a major incident occurs. When taking time off, arranging with others in the EH&S Department to cover all responsibilities. Immediate establish a working knowledge of specialty areas as assigned by the Regional EH&S Manager. Continue to develop this working knowledge until it is expertise in the area. Coordinate with other EH&S Department members to maximize the Company?s SHEC to the extent possible. Ask for help from others, when their knowledge or experience can help you improve your efficiency. Manage EH&S-related projects as requested by the Regional EH&S Manager. May include conducting environmental field sampling and monitoring as required, and coordinate for subsequent testing, analysis and reporting of results. Assume leadership position to direct emergency response activities, as requested and qualified. Requirements: EDUCATION and SKILLS: B.S. degree in Environmental Science or Engineering Entry-level experience in environmental science or similar technical field Excellent interpersonal and writing skills Must be detail oriented, self-starter able to work independently and also in a teamwork environment Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets a must Ability to interact and communicate well with people at all levels of the organizationApply Now!
