AIX/Unix System Administrator

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

 

This position is responsible for system administration and maintenance of administrative application servers.  This includes system monitoring, tuning, space monitoring, system security/patch update analysis, backups and disaster recovery preparedness.  These systems are critical to the operation of the College’s business and must be highly available and reliable.  Required to support unscheduled or urgent events outside business hours.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

1.         Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and/or experience.

 

2.         Minimum two years of solid experience as a Unix System Administrator.

 

3.         Minimum one year experience with AIX and IBM.

 

PREFERRED SKILLS:

 

1.         Working knowledge of IBM p-series virtualization.



2.         General AIX system administration and trouble shooting skills including patch management, process management, command line utilities, etc.



3.         Shell programming (KSH, Perl, etc).

4.         Sun Solaris.

5.         SAN storage solution.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.         Install, configure, monitor and maintain Unix systems.  Plan and install, or supervise vendor installation of hardware upgrades.

2.         Ensure data integrity and system security by evaluating; implementing and managing appropriate software or hardware solutions.

3.         Coordinate security efforts with other ITS staff responsible for system and network administration.

4.         Work closely with DBA to ensure data recoverability by maintaining and implementing a plan for system backups and database archive operations.

5.         Tune the systems to achieve optimum performance.

6.         Develop, plan, test system disaster recovery document.

7.         Document and log all system changes.

8.         Perform proactive capacity planning while communicating trends and/or exception to manager.

9.         Participate in AIX hardware evaluation, need analysis and feasibility studies as required.

10.       Manage general system activities such as maintaining accounts, printers, print queues, and disk space allocation.

11.       Monitor system’s logs.

12.       Provide technical leadership, guidance and training.

13.       Remain current with developments in relevant professional areas through reading, research, and participation in conferences, workshops and meetings.

14.       Must be able to work independently or as part of a team, respect confidentiality and maintain courtesy with customer.

15.       Other duties as assigned.  (Macalester College reserves the right to change job responsibilities or duties based on the needs of the college.)
