Assistant Professor of Earth Science
This is a full time, nine month appointment (7 workload units).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will teach courses in Earth Science and Planetary Biology, Meteorology, Oceanography, Astronomy, Geology, and a Research Internship and Seminar course, and possibly courses in GIS, as well as specialized courses related to the candidate's interests; collaborate with colleagues on the development of program and school-wide projects; contribute to the development of laboratory exercises and programs and to the development of a curriculum-based community-based research initiative; serve on committees; advise students in the major; perform scholarly activities, including grant writing to support research; may assist with program coordination (scheduling) and laboratory direction.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS: Qualified individuals will have earned a PhD in an area of Earth Science, with a broad background in the Earth Sciences and a focus on environmental themes; at least 3 years of documented successful undergraduate teaching of both science majors and non-majors, and, preferably, pre-service teachers enrolled in education programs. Experience with hands-on inquiry-based pedagogies is essential. The Natural Science and Mathematics Division is developing its program to emphasize and environmental theme, so experience in teaching and thinking about Earth Science in the context of environmental issues is highly desired. A broad-based thinker with the ability to integrate concepts across disciplines is strongly preferred. ArcGIS and ArcPAD skills a big plus. New Science laboratories have just been completed and are equipped with the tools necessary to do earth science and environmental research. Strong technological skills are a plus.
