Assistant to the Chair

Duties And ResponsibilitiesThe Assistant to the Chair provides support and logistical management for the Chair of the Department of Social Medicine and all of his key organizational relationships. The Assistant to the Chair's primary responsibilities include: managing the Chair's schedule and all related preparation and business arrangements, managing the communications of the Chair in his capacity as the lead at the Department of Social Medicine and in his other associated organizational leadership roles including acting as a liaison with key outside organizations and personnel, managing the activities of the Chair's office, and coordination of special events and projects. This is a 12 month temporary term position.Required Education, Experience and Skills

Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required. 3+ years of relevant experience, including supervisory experience.

Additional requirements: Master's degree or equivalent in a related field preferred. Competence to assess priorities and manage multiple complex activities in a time-sensitive environment and meet deadlines with attention to detail and quality. Ability to collaborate with affiliated institutions in a complex and fast-paced environment. Experience providing administrative support in an office setting. Ability to work independently and take initiative. Strong communication and organizational skills. Computer skills in word processing, database and spreadsheet programs (Microsoft Office applications preferred). Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interact professionally with culturally diverse staff, clients and consultants. Able to provide a humanistic and professional face to all communications. Ability to negotiate priorities among differing interests and audiences. Sound judgment. Commitment to socially directed interventions for global humanitarian concerns. Understanding of global health issues preferred. Additional language skills in French, Haitian Creole and/or Spanish helpful.Additional InformationThis is a position of facilitation, communication and organization across institutions in the Boston area and worldwide. The Assistant to the Chair works in close collaboration with the Department of Social Medicine, Francois Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights at the Harvard School of Public Health, the Brigham and Women's Hospital's Division of Social Medicine and Health Inequalities, and Partners In Health. It is anticipated that this position will manage up to three support positions, including an administrative assistant and research assistants.Required Screening Harvard University requires pre-employment reference and background screening.
