Located in Ithaca, N.Y., Cornell University is a bold, innovative and inclusive teaching and research university of academic distinction and public service where staff, faculty, and students alike are challenged to be active citizens of the world. As a member of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs team, this position will assist in directing the operations of one of the premier Greek systems in the United States. The Cornell University Fraternity & Sorority system is comprised of over 65 chapters and three councils (the Multicultural Greek Letter Council, the Panhellenic Association, and the Interfraternity Council): the assets of 15 chapters are owned and managed by Cornell and approximately 50 chapters are independent. About 3,500 students (30%) of the undergraduate population participate in the Greek experience. Specifically we are seeking an individual to work with our Interfraternity Council, serving as advisor to the Council and a number of IFC chapters. The Assistant Dean of Students serves as one of the primary university representatives to the Greek community at Cornell, providing support and guidance for chapters in the areas of educational programs, primarily focusing on alcohol abuse, hazing, and mental health and wellness; advising and counseling chapter officers; crisis management; cultural awareness; and alumni recruitment and relations. Co-advises the student-led self-governing system and participates in the University judicial process including chapter recognition for the Greek chapters. This position will work with the FSA team on implementation of the Creating Chapters of Excellence Initiative for Cornell University, developed in conjunction with Cornell's overall Residential Life Initiative, with a focus on upgrading the living standards and Greek experience for students. In this role you will:Enhance and develop strong leaders within the FSA community and improve the overall environment and residence of a large and diverse Greek community. Develop strong positive and collaborative relations with a dynamic group of university staff (Dean of Students, Campus Life, Gannett Health Services, etc.), students, faculty and alumni at Cornell University. Serve as an advisor to one of the three governing councils and a number of recognized chapters. Co-plan large scale events Homecoming Tailgate, New Member Conference, AD White Leadership Conference, Greek Awards Reception, Faculty Appreciation Reception, and Fraternity and Sorority Recruitment. Readily adapt your communication style and presentation to address challenges and make positive changes within the Greek community. Strong skills of persuasion and leadership with an understanding of what motivates a particular group to action are critical. Must be seen by the FSA community as both a subject matter expert in leadership, team building and risk management education; and a trusted and respected ally to bring forward and discuss problems, develop solutions and challenge student leaders to make difficult decisions and changes within their community. A Bachelors degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel or related field, with 2-3 years of experience working in fraternity and sorority affairs, or related experience and or education in student services required. Proven experience with event management, program planning, leadership development/training in higher education. Experience that illustrates the candidate used strong mutual relationships to achieve positive programming and educational goals. Ability to grow, nurture and develop positive community relationships is critical. Consistently demonstrated highly effective and tailored writing and speaking styles to convey messages and ideas to a diverse audience in order to build understanding, commitment and overall relationship. Been viewed and trusted by students, alumni and staff as extremely knowledgeable and highly skilled. Excellent communication skills both written and verbal, including editing, proofing and presentation skills. Excellent planning, coordinating and organizational skills. The ability to respond quickly and effectively to multiple priorities and situations with a high level of initiative is critical. High level of independence, creative problem solving. Requires the ability to persuade others to collaborate. Excellent computer skills including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Filemaker, or similar database software, and calendar management programs. A Master of Arts or Science in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel or related field strongly preferred. Previous experience working with Interfraternity Councils, and more specifically serving as an advisor to the Council and a number of IFC chapters is highly desirable.No relocation assistance is provided for this position.
