Bacteriology Manager - 08461

The Animal Health Diagnostic Center is focused on improving the health of food and fiber-producing, companion, sporting, zoo and wildlife animals, promoting food safety and prevention of zoonotic diseases. The center is one of the largest diagnostic centers in the country with the responsibility of monitoring, preventing and responding to outbreaks of infectious diseases and/or identifying individual pathogens in animals across the country. We seek a Manager of Technical Services to direct and coordinate the technical staff in performing a range of specified laboratory tests for use in clinical assessments, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and/or other specified veterinary medical conditions. The ideal candidate is experienced in clinical microbiology, is interested in pursuing a managerial career and has the ability to cultivate and develop new leaders in the field of diagnostic sciences. Duties include: Manage the administrative and operational responsibilities of the lab such as hiring and training staff, ordering and maintaining equipment and inventory, directing workflow, etc; Act and advise as the technical expert in test performance, sample collections, developing protocols; Drive quality assurance programs and ensure effective compliance including documentation and monitoring staff performance; Facilitate response to emergency situations and directing workflow, training as needed and collaboration with others; Research current trends and new techniques as well as writing and presenting in industry publications/conferences.
Bachelor's of science in microbiology, medical technology or related field that includes 3-5 years experience in human or veterinary clinical microbiology. Ability to work independently and to respond quickly and effectively to multiple assignments and conflicting priorities and situations. Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, take initiative, and respect highly confidential information. Previous supervision experience and the ability to develop excellent working relationships including communicating with staff, students, technicians, veterinarians and clients in a professional manner at all times while understanding and fully supporting the critical nature of effective and honest feedback to a high performance work force. Proficiency with a variety of computer programs (MS Office ' Word, Excel, PowerPoint; familiarity with laboratory information systems. Knowledge of laboratory automation equipment. Preferred: Advanced degrees or certifications in the field preferred. Familiarity with American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnostician guidelines and procedures. Mycology experience a plus.No relocation assistance is provided for this position.
