Position Summary
The Counselor/Coordinator will provide personal, academic (including transfer), career, and vocational counseling to international students, teach guidance classes as assigned, and coordinate, evaluate and further develop the International Student Program and provide matriculation services to international students in the areas of assessment, orientation, counseling, educational planning, intervention, retention and transfer.
The assignment may include day, evening, and weekend responsibilities. This faculty position is represented by the Faculty Association Unit, AFT 6157.
Duties and Responsibilities
Counseling/Instruction:
1. Currency and depth of knowledge in assigned area of responsibility.
2. Communicate subject/service matter clearly, correctly and effectively.
3. Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.
4. Counsel and teach students effectively.
5. Use methods and materials appropriate to the subject/service matter.
6. Appropriate preparation and organizational skills in area of assignment.
7. Commitment to professional development including but not limited to activities such as: participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, research projects, publishing academic work, participation in statewide committees or organizations, etc.
8. Participates in faculty responsibilities such as: course and curriculum development, committees, research and special projects as needed in the discipline/department or district.
9. Demonstrates sensitivity in working with students of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientation and disabilities.
10. Works cooperatively within the college community with students, staff, faculty and administrators.
11. Fosters a professional working environment.
12. Effective communication skills.
13. Sensitivity to diversity, a respect for differences and the dignity of others.
14. Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy.
15. Participate in department, division and college meetings, within the work week, but not in conflict with the member's primary assignment.
16. Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g., grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions.
17. Submit and maintain appropriate office hours.
Coordination:
18. Day-to-day functions of the program and applying up-to-date concepts to curriculum, support services, and procedures.
19. Collect pertinent data related to the retention, matriculation, and transfer of international students.
20. Assist in recruitment of international students.
21. Render comprehensive service unique to the international student population.
22. Develop two-year academic and vocational education plans.
23. Develop intervention strategies for students on probation and readmitted students that have been academically disqualified.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development, OR the equivalent. (Note: A license as a Marriage and Family Therapist - MFT - is an alternative qualification for this discipline).
2. Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse academic socioeconomic, gender, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the students we serve and sensitivity to and knowledge and understanding of groups historically underrepresented, and groups who may have experienced discrimination.
3. Success integrating diversity as appropriate into the major duties outlined in the job description and in the duties listed in the District's hiring policy; or demonstrated equivalent transferable skills to do so.
Desired Qualifications:
1. Familiar with F-1 Visa processing, SEVIS, and community resources to assist international students.
2. Familiar with adult learning and counseling literature and theories.
3. Knowledge and experience working with a college-aged international student population.
4. Bilingual/bicultural ability and experience.
5. Community college experience.
6. Computer application skills and working knowledge of integrated databases.
7. Ability to build a strong academic program to attract international students.
8. Strong desire to strengthen the counseling curriculum.
