DIAGNOSTICS CLINICAL PATHOLOGIST – JOB #46044Animal Care ProgramUNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGOLOCATION: SAN DIEGO, CA (LA JOLLA 92093)Salary commensurate with qualifications and experienceFull Time Position. Filing Deadline: 05/27/2008 or until filled. DESCRIPTION:Provide diagnostic support and pathology services for the laboratory animal care program and research faculty, staff and students working with research animals in the UCSD system, other academic institutions and private research/biotechnical facilities using animals. Consult and collaborate with campus researchers with the possibility of being co-investigator on grants. Train technicians in general pathology skills. Train laboratory animal Medicine DVM resident(s) and develop an instructional component for the laboratory animal and possibly laboratory animal pathology program. Continue with the overall activities of the laboratory animal medicine diagnostic areas (clinical pathology, microbiology, parasitology and pathology). Assist in management and advance the capabilities of the diagnostic lab to include research capabilities in molecular diagnostics, sero diagnostics, and image analysis. Provide gross necropsy and histopathology services tailored for the diagnosis of spontaneous or infectious diseases in laboratory animals. Consult on experimental pathology procedures.Position will require availability for weekend and holiday work and on-call duty.QUALIFICATIONS:Must be board certified, board eligible or working toward board eligibility by the American College of Veterinary Pathology.Ability to communicate effectively on a group presentation basis to train research technicians, health staff, and husbandry staff.Detailed knowledge in the practice of veterinary medicine and pathology, especially in laboratory animal medicine.Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with technical staff and management.Ability to communicate on a one-to-one basis as an aid to the diagnosis of disease problems, and ability to seek out proper veterinary medical treatment.Skill in working as part of a team, providing veterinary medical care.Ability to communicate with researchers, technicians, and staff. Interpersonal skills sufficient to diplomatically interact to resolve conflicts which occur when laboratory animal policies and procedures are violated.General knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act. General knowledge of the NIH Guidelines as they relate to laboratory animals.Detailed knowledge of the pathology of cats, dogs, rodents, pigs, primates, pigeons, goats, sheep, frog, and other reptiles, domestic fowl, fresh and saltwater fish, and marine mammals.Skill in performing necropsies on laboratory animals.Knowledge of performing therapeutic treatment of various laboratory animals. Skill in the diagnosis of disease in laboratory animals. General knowledge of pre and post surgical care of laboratory animals.PC skills (Microsoft applications: Word, Excel, Access, Outlook) and data processing.Must have excellent and written communication skills and must be able to interact in a positive, effective manner, with all personnel, e.g. technical staff, students, faculty.SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:• DVM or equivalent with advanced training in anatomic pathology.• PhD or equivalent postdoc research training at appointment.• Board certification or training sufficient to qualify for examination in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology.• Valid California drivers license.Excellent benefits that start the first day of hire.
