Under the direction of the Design Project Manager, the Designer I is responsible for conceptualizing a prototype and covers, and designing the page layout. The Designer I works closely with the design team, editorial and marketing to establish the look of the project. In addition, throughout the design process, the Designer I is tasked with balancing the needs of editorial and marketing while steadfastly maintaining the integrity of the design. Working with the Design Project Manager, the Designer I will independently handle prototyping of major projects for a school series and first edition series or titles. These projects carry significant financial business impact. The Designer I will oversee the page layout of the projects to insure the final prototype vision is maintained and to address any new elements that may arise throughout the page layout process. The Designer I will work on high profile cover designs that have Corporate Level Management as stakeholders. In addition, the Designer I is also responsible for mentoring other staff and freelance designers. Required Experience:?æ 3-5 years of experience as a Designer in an educational publishing environment. ?æ BFA from an accredited four-year college specializing in graphic design/fine art, or graduate of an art school or equivalent design work experience.?æ Advanced knowledge of QuarkXpress, Illustrator, Photoshop and Acrobat; Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and FileMaker; Thorough understanding of print and file management (e.g. server, FTP); Knowledge of Frame, InDesign, and FlightCheck is a plus?æ Excellent artistic, verbal and written communication skills.?æ Ability to collaborate with other groups in a team environment (e.g. Marketing, Editorial, Customization); ?æ Ability to self-manage and work independently; to multitask and prioritize projects.?æ Detail-oriented with creative skills.?æ Knowledge of design and typography.
