Administrative Computing and Telecommunications (ACT) at UC San Diego houses a team of top IT professionals developing innovative technology for higher education. We serve a large and diverse clientele and are always working to increase the functionality and usability of campus technology for all users. The Executive Director of IT Applications provides leadership and vision for strategic planning, development, maintenance, and overall management of UC San Diego's core applications, portals, and data. These systems are used by more than 100,000 students, faculty, staff, parents, and affiliates.Responsibilities include:* Oversee the delivery of reliable, secure, and cost-effective portal, core applications, middleware, and data.* Manage a budget of about $6 million and provide leadership to more than 60 programmers and analysts.* Provide vision and leadership for emerging application technologies through consultation and understanding of user needs.*Collaborate with campus executives, business officers, faculty, students, other campus IT service providers, industry vendors, and others to coordinate, establish, and continuously improve automation of university business services.* Work collaboratively to create a robust middleware architecture that utilizes SOA methodology and sets campus wide technology standards for application development.* Develop and implement quality control standards/procedures that improve timeliness and quality of services.* Provide leadership in building partnerships and identifying opportunities to support campus information technology services.* Represent UC San Diego on a number of UC-wide and national leading-edge technology and collaborative business initiatives.Qualifications:* Experience of at least 15 years in managing the development and maintenance of complex cross-platform business applications in a large commercial, government, or higher education organization.* Bachelor degree in business/management, computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a related discipline. Graduate degree preferred.* Ability to think strategically and creatively, to anticipate technology trends, and to transfer that thinking into cogent plans for a large and complex organization.* Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the development, implementation and maintenance of information systems using both traditional (e.g., IBM mainframe) and current standard web-based technologies.* Knowledge and experience with key programming languages (in particular Java), databases (DB2 preferred), SOA, and current analysis/development techniques.SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Background check required.Excellent benefits that start the first day of hire.
