Financial Coordinator/Dental Assistant
Overview: Performs insurance and patient financial functions including cashiering at Marquette University School of Dentistry's South Side Satelite Clinic. Position includes all duties related to insurance and patient billing including entry of patient treatment plans and verifying insurance. Also pre-authorizations, treatment plan consulations with students and patients and calculation of patient co-payments. Dental assist on clinic floor as requested. Serve as back-up to Clinic Coordinator as needed.
Essential Functions: Handle all pre-authorizations and maintain related paperwork. Calculate patient co-payments for all treatment plans. Verify and track all Medicaid and cash transactions. Enter treatment plans as needed into Axium. Dental assist on clinic floor and serve as back-up to Clinic Coordinator as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Collect and allocate cash payments and track Medicaid billing through payment. 2. Tabulate patient discounts and maintain appropriate paperwork. 3. Review treatment plans with students/patients and assist with the completion of Medicaid and private insurance pre-authorizations, covered and non-covered procedures, financial arrangements, and follow through to completion. 4. Enter all preauthorizations correspondence in Axium including end dates, within the specified time frame. 5. Work closely with the Satellite Clinic Coordinator to ensure patients are appointed for pre-authorized procedures only after pre-authorizations are back, and patients are informed of their responsibilities in terms of co-payments, non-covered services, etc. 6. Provide coverage for Clinic Coordinator and Dental Assistant in his/her absence or as needed. 7. Calculate and document all patient co-payments on treatment plans where co-payments are due. 8. Generate Axium reports on production, utilization, procedures, or others as directed. 9. Attend in-service, staff development, OSHA, HIPAA and any other programs as directed. 10. Perform any and all related duties as required or assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: High School education and two years of dental assistant/reception experience required. Knowledge of: dental terminology and anatomy; OSHA requirements and 4-handed dentistry is required. Also requires computer literacy, dexterity, excellent verbal and written communication skills, excellent customer service and listening skills, courteous demeanor, discretion, flexibility, ability to work and communicate with people from a diverse population; and the ability to work independently with little supervision and constant interruptions in an environment that can be stressful at times.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of dental insurance preferred. Bilingual in Spanish a plus. Basic computer skills required. Must be CPR certified or become certified within 6 months after employment.
