General Counsel

We are looking for a full time General Counsel to provide legal advice on all matters having legal implications for the Fellowship, provide effective leadership and administration of the Legal Department, and serve as Secretary of the Corporation. InterVarsity Christian Fellowship is an evangelical campus mission serving more than 35,000 students and faculty on more than 560 campuses nationwide. Incorporated in 1941, InterVarsity has a rich tradition of campus witness, thoughtful discipleship, and a concern for world missions. Our vision is to see students and faculty transformed, campuses renewed, and world-changers developed.
To that end, the General Counsel will have responsibilities including:
Personal:
· Be a maturing disciple of Jesus Christ and a lifelong learner who values the discipleship of the mind
Leadership:
· Serve as an officer of the Corporation and a member of the Operations Ministry Leadership Team
· Ensure that the goals of all reporting areas align with InterVarsity’s Doctrinal Basis, Purpose Statement, Core Values and National Initiatives
Collaboration:
· Serve the entire movement with wisdom and the application of leadership gifts in the role of Legal Counsel and Corporate Secretary
· Partner closely with all members of senior leadership, the Cabinet, the Board Chair, operations team leaders and other fellowship leaders as appropriate.
Legal:
· Respond promptly and competently to requests from staff for legal advice on Fellowship matters
· Bring legal issues and concerns to the attention of the administration helping them to respond appropriately
· Participate in reviewing, developing, revising and interpreting policies
· Provide advice in all issues relating to employment law, non-profit law, federal and state statues and regulations
· Alert management and the Board to legal risks and changes in the law impacting the Corporation, and recommend action
· Resolve disputes via proactive initiatives, trouble-shooting and mediation
· Ensure proper negotiation and authorization on all legal contracts
· Network with peers in other para-church ministries
· Maintain professional competency by participating in continuing legal education through membership in the State and local Bar Associations and ongoing reading of legal periodicals and attendance at seminars
Corporate Secretary:
· Perform duties as required by the corporate bylaws; maintain historic corporate records
· Advise and recommend to the Board policies and changes in policies required to comply with the law and/or to improve corporate operations; maintain historic issues of the Board Standing Policies Manual and a current Board Reference Book
Supervision:
· Appoint, supervise, lead and evaluate supervisees, and foster an environment of spiritual growth
· Provide encouragement, accountability, and ongoing feedback on individual performance, conduct performance reviews annually
Administration:
· Perform administrative tasks necessary to effectively manage the Legal Department
· Ensure corporate legal records are current, complete and well maintained
Fund Development:
· Develop a team of prayer and financial support.
· Raise an agreed-upon amount of personal financial support
· Nurture donor relationships through visits, phone calls, and regular prayer letters
· Communicate regularly with staff about their fund development responsibilities
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Annually affirm InterVarsity’s Statement of Agreement
· J.D. or equivalent degree from accredited university
· Current Wisconsin bar membership in good standing
· At least 10 years law practice experience, a majority of which should be in corporation law
· Strong team player, with proven ability to work collaboratively with other leaders
· Conflict resolution skills and cross-cultural abilities
· Customer orientation
· Strong problem solving skills
· Strong oral and written communication skills
· Ability to relocate and reside in Madison vicinity
