Salary is dependent on experience and qualifications.Date Posted: February 13, 2008Summary The successful applicant will utilize their knowledge and experience to develop, design, and modify software applications for producing geodetic imaging data for use by geophysicists to study earthquakes, volcanoes, glaciers, and other processes associated with the deforming earth. Initially, this job involves mastering existing software, analyzing large amounts of data, and working with geophysicists to improve the quality of these geodetic images. We hope that any successful candidate will consider ways to further automate and better document the existing data flow.Job Duties Use state-of-the-art radar processing codes to processes satellite radar images and produce interferometric measurements of ground deformation.Use state-of-the-art optical image processing codes to processes pairs of optical images to produce measurements of ground deformation.Contribute to the development and maintenance of codes for new applications. The candidate will develop and modify software applications and design, write and debug portions of application functions/libraries, particularly for accessing, displaying and delivering archived data. Develop applications to interact with the other systems for data acquisition/analysis and distribution. Integrates, tests, and operates software applications used to process data from research instruments.May contribute to journal articles, publications and may present findings at meetings, scientific organizations or conferences with Principal Investigator.Design and deliver training for new users how to use these codes.Facilitate the use of these codes as well as access to relevant data.Interact with students, postdocs, and faculty on a regular basis.Be willing to deal with periods of intense activity when responding to extreme events (e.g., earthquakes).Assume responsibility for ordering and archiving imaging data from international space agencies.Minimum Requirements A Bachelors or Masters degree in electrical engineering or computer science. Proficiency with modern computing environments and languages a necessity (e.g., Python, Perl, C++, C). Experience with signal processing required.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities2-5 years experience in developing software that interacts with large scientific data sets desirable.Experience or exposure to remote sensing desirable.Experience with data base software (e.g., MySQL) desirable.Good knowledge of basic linear algebra desirable.Caltech is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.
