Guidance Counselor

The Boys' Club of New York seeks an experienced Guidance Counselor to work in our after-school education/recreation program serving boys ages 6 to 17 in Flushing, Queens.  This is a full-time position working Monday-Friday, 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with occasional Saturday activities.

Essential Responsibilities:  Provide a network of guidance and counseling support services for members with a specific emphasis on developing and maintaining programs that promote and enhance The Boys' Club goals relative to the educational, social, vocational and professional development of members.  Specifically, the Guidance Counselor will provide on-going individual and group guidance and counseling services as appropriate and will be an advocate for members, playing an active role in working with all staff to identify issues needing attention and recommending appropriate strategies for dealing with those issues.  In addition the Guidance Counselor will:  oversee the clubhouse Homework Help program; provide parents and other staff members with updates and information regarding counseling and guidance concerns relative to a member(s); maintain a referral base of appropriate counseling and family therapy centers; prepare requisite reports detailng activities and programs; develop an active outreach program with schools, CBOs and other community organizations; with with staff on issues relating to behavior management and related guidance issues.

Qualifications:  MSW, MA/MS in clinical psychology or guidance; minimum five years work experience in a public shcool or not-for-profit organization.  Strong oral and written communication skills; facilitation and counseling skills for individuals and groups; demonstrated experience working with a broad constitutency (parents, members, community groups); experience working with a very diverse population and understanding of the issues facing disadvantaged urban families; team player; willingness to work a flexible and demanding schedule.
