Performance Responsibilities 

Under general supervision of the Director, International Center, to perform a variety of technical and clerical duties related to the intake of international students and processing of immigration documents; provide information on federal, state, and institutional regulations and requirements; perform other related job duties as assigned. 




EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: 

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

a. Act as Designated School Official (DSO) with regard to federal regulations that pertain to international students. 

b. Process, determine eligibility, and issue immigration-related documents to prospective and continuing international students. 

c. Provide information and updates to students on federal, state and institutional regulations and policies; inform students of their rights and responsibilities which govern their stay in the United States. 

d. Maintain the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) to satisfy the reporting requirements for institutional compliance. 

e. Provide research support, departmental records, statistical data, and other related documentation to the appropriate management staff. 

f. Review applications for admission to the college, follow-up with students, conduct new international student orientation, and register new students in related coursework. 

g. Answer routine letters, emails, and other inquiries independently. 

h. Arrange meetings for the supervisor; make inquiries and obtain information and documents for the supervisor, which may involve contact with other departments. 

i. Compose and edit professional business correspondence, such as verification letters to governmental agencies, status letters, business updates and reports. 

j. Undertake and carry forward a variety of projects requiring considerable independent judgment and initiative as assigned. 

k. Receive a variety of information, which may be of a confidential nature, such as medical reports, immigration status, etc. 

l. Operate a variety of modern office equipment including computers and applicable software such as word processing, spreadsheets, and data base applications. 

m. May direct and oversee the work of subordinate employees. 

n. Receive visitors and provide information; refer callers to proper officials. 

o. Assist in the preparation of departmental reports by gathering and summarizing information from a variety of sources; develop working knowledge of special terminology related to the function to which assigned. 

p. Maintain budget records and files. 

q. Perform and maintain records for the daily cash out procedures pertaining to application and registration fees as well as other miscellaneous fees for the International Center. 

r. Take and transcribe minutes of meetings. 

s. Order supplies and prepare purchase orders. 

t. Perform other related job duties as assigned.  







Minimum Qualifications: 

Faculty/Educational Administrators complete the Equivalency Application only if you do not meet the minimum qualifications for the position you are applying to, and you wish to be considered. 




Knowledge of: 

1.Federal regulations, legislation, procedures and related documents which pertain to the stay of international students in the United States. 

2.Federal laws, regulations, forms and authorization channels for international students. 

3.Rights and responsibilities of international students who are governed by Federal regulations. 

4.Modern office equipment and procedures, including personal computers and applicable software programs. 

5.Budgetary procedures. 

6.Principles of business letter and report writing, including proper English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation. 




Ability to: 

7.Process immigration related documents and other documents pertaining to international students including application, registration and health insurance forms. 

8.Provide information to students on their rights and responsibilities as related to the federal regulations which govern their stay in the United States. 

9.Perform technical and clerical work requiring independent judgment and discretion. 

10.Provide research support to the department, relative to international student/immigration issues. 

11.Independently prepare responses to routine correspondence. 

12.Set up and maintain a variety of files and records. 

13.Assist in departmental report preparation. 

14.Understand and carry out complex written and oral instructions. 

15.Assist in the coordination of complex programs. 

16.Keyboard at a net corrected speed of 55 words per minute. 

17.Establish and maintain effective relationships with a diverse population of students, community agencies, and the public, as well as co-workers and other college and district staff. 




Education and Experience: 

18.Completion of at least one year college level coursework in related subject areas. 

19.Minimum of two years highly responsible secretarial or technical experience; some experience which would provide knowledge of the functions of college programs and functions related to the international student. 

20.Or, any combination of education and experience that would provide the required qualifications. 




Special Requirement: 

Must be a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident to serve as a Designated School Official (D.S.O.).  







Conditions of Employment 

This is a regular, full-time, 12-month per year position. The normal hours of work will be 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, however some flexibility in shift is required to meet the needs of International Center operation. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

As the Immigration Technician, you are responsible for the maintenance of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) as well as satisfying federal reporting requirements under the guidance of the Director. Please explain your familiarity with this or a similar system and include if you have served as a "Designated School Official" (DSO ) in your current or previous employment. 




4. Explain your philosophy of providing good customer service and how you have put this into practice in your previous employment(s). 




5. Describe your level of technical ability and include a brief description of the software applications in which you are proficient. Describe how you have used these applications.  




Salary Range $44,393 - $54,022 

Salary Range E-48 

Based on the 2007/2008 Salary Schedule  




Pay Philosophy 

Starting salaries for support staff positions begin at Step-1 of the salary range. Employees hired prior to April 1 of each year will move to the next step on the upcoming July 1. Employees hired on or after April 1 of each year will move to the next step the following July 1. All movement on the salary schedule will occur July 1 of each year for all classified employees.

Benefits: 

The District provides a comprehensive benefit program effective the first calendar day of the month following the first day of regular employment. Dental and vision care plans for employees and dependents, and life insurance and income protection plans for employees are fully paid by the District. A variety of medical plans covering employees and their dependents are available, with the District paying the major portion of the cost. Other liberal benefits include, on an annual basis: vacation, 12 days the first year; sick leave, 12 days; holidays, averaging 12 days. Employees participate in both the Public Employees Retirement System and Social Security.
