Managing Editor, Test Development

 The NBME is a premier not-for-profit organization that develops licensure and educational achievement examinations for the health professions.  In addition to producing credentialing examinations, the NBME also has a major commitment to research and development in evaluation and measurement.  Located in Philadelphia adjacent to the campus of the University of Pennsylvania, the NBME has a stimulating professional environment and state-of-the art facilities. The NBME is currently seeking a Managing Editor to join its team.  This position will supervise a team of six to seven people.  Primary duties include, but are not limited to: Quality control all editing across client programs to ensure consistency, quality, and accurate implementation of editorial style. Manage day-to-day operations of client programs including problem resolution, prioritization of tasks and assignment of staff to tasks, and equitable work distribution among staff. Develop and mentor staff through leadership, example, and frequent communication. Create annual schedule for exam programs and client projects including coordinating committee meetings, staff assignments, and roll out of paper and pencil examinations and/or CBT resource files; monitor Manage exam production: paper and pencil publishing, pictorial production, CBT exams, ATA, resource files. Contact with client committees and staff about test development including item-writing training, pool monitoring, scheduling issues, and any other client-related issues. Key Deliverables include, but are not limited to: Deliver accurate, high-quality examinations that meet client specifications and client-specific style by agreed-upon date. Ensure that team works effectively and efficiently and that staff members are properly trained and mentored. Provide ongoing training of item writers including developing of appropriate materials. Deliver items that meet or exceed quality standards for committee review. Produce annual schedules/timelines for client programs. Deliver materials for meetings as scheduled. Provide accurate analysis of pool to client staff, and develop assignments based on this analysis as requested. Participate in formation of test development budget for client examinations. Participate in formation of test development portion of RFPs. Support the values of the NBME. Job Requirements include, but not limited to: Bachelor's degree. Five to eight years experience in medical writing and/or editing. Experience editing or writing test items. Advanced knowledge of test development procedures including paper and pencil production as well as CBT production. Excellent grammar, punctuation, and spelling skills. Excellent interpersonal communication skills. Application of medical knowledge in addition to medical terminology. Experience managing and leading a team. Ability to mentor staff in editing research, identifying item flaws, and developing assertiveness and meeting demeanor. Ability to resolve conflict and solve problems. Have a working knowledge of all computer systems necessary to complete the tasks of the position.
