Mechanical Engineer

Interact with customers to define projects, resolve conflicts, clarify and negotiate any mechanical issues that might arise in the planning and design phase of projects. Review drawings and verify field conditions of existing mechanical systems, then design new systems or revise existing systems to meet the requirements of the project. Prepare cost estimates, contract drawings and specifications. Review various types of projects as well as participate in cross-functional teams to provide practical solutions to design problems. Supervise the preparation of designs generated by other engineering staff, review concepts, design drawings and specifications and be the engineer of record for these mechanical systems. Inspect and analyze malfunctions in HVAC equipment and power plant systems and propose solutions as appropriate. As needed, establish budgetary estimates and recommend priorities for Capital and Maintenance and Repair Projects. For building projects and alterations of major mechanical systems, review drawings and specifications and provide input on available utility services.  Assure that these requirements are met, completed on time, within budgetary constraints and assure that the University's requirements are upheld and that the project meets design goals. Propose alternatives and design optimum solutions or present operational changes to be made by craftsmen or plant operators.


A Bachelors of Science Degree in Engineering and a N.Y. State Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.  A minimum of seven years of mechanical engineering design experience is required. Five or more years of stated experience must be in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system design. The candidate must have excellent written and verbal communications skills and a focus on customer service.

A Mechanical Engineering Degree is preferred.  Mechanical design experience in laboratory, educational and commercial building systems is preferred.  AutoCAD design experience is desired.  Three or more years of experience in fire protection system design is desired.
