Sonoma State University, located 48 miles north of San Francisco, is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University. Our beautiful campus is located in the Wine Country at the foot of the Sonoma hills.
The Position: Under the general supervision of the Director of NSCS the incumbent provides engineering, analysis, modification, and support for SSU’s communications network. The Network Analyst will install, configure, analyze, and monitor a mid-sized Cisco and Aruba wired and wireless network. The incumbent will troubleshoot and correct tier-2 connectivity problems and failures on the communications network including responding to out-of-hours major outages. The incumbent will maintain and secure network resources from inappropriate access, and will employ network systems and tools to monitor and react to network security and performance alarms/logs. The analyst will also report, track, and disseminate information on major communication service problems; maintain and update network/telephony database systems; provide project coordination/lead functions for projects assigned to IT; act as a technical liaison with vendors; and create and update network documentation. The incumbent will supervise and train student assistants in proper configuration and maintenance of campus voice, video, and data network documentation; and provide back-up assistance on the top five telephony and voice-mail related user requests. Position requires occasional travel, including by car and airplane and may require occasional work outside normal campus business hours in order to perform upgrades, maintenance, and to make repairs.
Qualifications: Requires a bachelor's degree in a related technical field AND a minimum of three years of progressively responsible technical experience primarily in TCP/IP switching, routing, and security. Additional experience beyond the minimum three years that demonstrates acquisition and successful application of the skills, knowledge, and abilities identified above may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-by-year basis. The successful candidate must possess hands-on experience installing, configuring, and troubleshooting wireless LANs including conducting site surveys, troubleshooting 802.11 a/b/g wireless networks, point-to-point wireless wave bridging, and knowledge of cellular technologies and protocols such as CDMA, TDMA, GSM, PCS, CDPD, GPRS. CCNA certification within the last three years highly desired. Must possess knowledge of wireless networking security and weaknesses and experience configuring wireless clients on various computer platforms including Macintosh, Windows 2003/XP/Vista, and Linux. Requires experience with: network monitoring tools that gather and present threshold alarms as well as usage information; tools and methods for manipulating large data sets to answer questions that profile network use and performance; CiscoWorks or similar application for configuration change management of network equipment; configuring and troubleshooting VLAN technologies; using packet traces from network analyzers in conjunction with protocol specification documents as an aid in resolving network problems; installing and configuring network-enabling services such as DHCP/BOOTP servers including maintaining data integrity and consistency of such services. The candidate must possess the ability to install and maintain basic to complex data networking equipment; analyze and investigate fundamental to complex networking technical problems; understand and apply networking concepts; effectively employ excellent communication skills allowing collaborative communication with both technical and non-technical personnel; apply overall policies and long-term direction to network systems operations and implementation activities; work effectively as part of a loosely structured team to provide network services to end-users; develop standards and procedures for technical staff and customers; demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills; establish and maintain collaborative working relationships; listen to the user, ascertain the problem, and provide courteous, timely solutions to their voice and data network problems; and provide outstanding customer service to students, staff, and faculty while working in a professional environment. Requires the physical ability to climb ladders, lift, carry, or otherwise move and position equipment weighing up to 50 lbs while installing and maintaining systems; sometimes work in tight and confined spaces; frequently stand and walk, reach with hands and arms, use fingers, stoop, and kneel. Salary and Benefits: The salary range is $4,314 to $8,831 a month. Starting salary placement will not exceed the beginning of the range. This is a full time, non-exempt position, which will lead toward permanent status following the successful completion of a probationary period.
