Operations Manager for Cornell Catering - 08380
The Operations Manager for Cornell Catering works closely with the Director of Catering to maintain, promote, and enhance the programs and services Cornell Catering provides for the Cornell community. This position provides daily operational oversight of event details and planning while also assisting the Director with fostering strong client relationships across campus. The Catering department has an operating budget in excess of $ 2,300,000. Position oversees the ordering of and inventory of necessary catering equipment, ensures that event billing is compiled timely and accurately. Position is also expected to act as an Event Manager and oversee operational details of catered events as are necessary and assigned. This position will also assist the Director of Catering in budget development, financial stewardship, staff management and development, menu planning/pricing, client relationships, sales and marketing. Attract and recruit exceptional talent; encourage staff throughout the organization. Encourage an open environment where staff and management contribute freely, and creativity and risk taking to improve operations is welcomed. With the human resources staff, ensure that management practices are consistent with all relevant laws, Cornell's policies and human resource values and principles. Assist the Director in oversight and strategic direction for catering. Provide leadership to enhance sales and strengthen marketing strategies.
Position requires various hours including nights and weekends in a physically demanding environment. The Operations Manager at times may be required to assist with loading and unloading of catering trucks, rolling food carts, moving tables and chairs and carrying boxes to and from loading docks which may or may not have access to an elevator. Position may be required to drive catering truck on short notice.
Bachelor's degree and two to three years of related experience, or the equivalent. Two years of food service/catering supervisory experience required. Proven ability to manage high profile client relationships with tact and diplomacy. Effective communication skills, exceptional organizational skills and facility with standard desktop programs. Understanding and experience in cost control, merchandising and sales in regards to food service/catering. Experience in working with clients and staff on large events ranging from 200-6000 people. Experience and comfort with off premise Catering is critical. Demonstrated success with growing a catering program including significantly increasing sales. Ability to work long and varied hours supporting a physically demanding environment. Must be able to lift 50lbs, sometimes carrying weight for long distances, up stairs and in tight spaces. Knowledge of food and health codes. Valid drivers license required.More than three but less than five years experience as an Events Manager or supervisory in a food service program strongly preferred. Understanding of University/College catering and the nuances involved is a plus. Knowledge of food and health codes is desirable. Safe Serve certification a plus. Computer knowledge of Word with Windows, Excel and of Event Master/ Menu Management or a similar food management system is preferred. Some culinary knowledge is desirable.
