A postdoctoral research associate position is needed to conduct research into aspects of Xylella fastidiosa biology. Effort will be directed toward understanding cell movement, colonization, biofilm development, and cell communication by the bacterium that causes Pierce's disease in grape. Bacterial activity will be studied in planta as well as in #8216;artificial' xylem vessels (flow chambers) that will be constructed using nano- and microfabrication technologies. Appointee must have an interest in developing the necessary skills to integrate microbiology and nanofabrication. Fabrication of artificial vessels will be done at Cornell University's Nanofabrication Facility (www.cnf.cornell.edu ) where biologists are guided through fabrication processes. Appointee will participate in the activities of the Nanobiotechnology Center (NBTC) ( www.nbtc.cornell.edu ) and will interact with a well-established research team and program in Xylella biology in the laboratories of Drs. Applicants with a Ph.D. degree in Plant Pathology, Microbiology or related field will be considered. Candidates should be skilled in the understanding and use of state-of-the-art technologies employed for investigating the biology of bacteria. Individuals with backgrounds in cell biology, plant-microbe interactions, molecular biology, and/or possessing microscopy skills are especially encouraged to apply.
