Position Concept

 

The Practical Nursing Department Chair is the Academic Nursing Coordinator of the nursing program and assists the Administrator of the Practical Nursing Program. The Nursing Chair assists the Administrator with the responsibility for the administration, planning, implementation and evaluation of the program.  The department chairperson is a manager of the faculty, students, curriculum and overall effectiveness of the department. The department chair is responsible for maintaining in their department, the academic standards and quality levels that are expected by our faculty, students, accrediting agencies and community.  These academic standards and quality levels require consistent planning, implementing and reporting. The department chairperson retains teaching responsibilities and acts as a master teacher in their subject area(s).  The Practical Nursing Chair reports directly to the PN Program Administrator of the college.

 

Responsibilities

 

It is the responsibilities of the Practical Nursing Chair to:

 

•  Provide leadership to the nursing department in education and administrative matters.

•  Maintain communications with the PN Administrator, Academic Dean, faculty, students, and clinical sites.

•  Provide regular meetings for the nursing faculty.

•  Recommend faculty for hiring, assign faculty, and assess credentials.

•  Assist PN Administrator with orientation process for all new nursing faculty.

•  Assist PN Administrator with curriculum planning and updates as needed.

•  Communicate all nursing academic and administrative matters to the PN Administrator for approval.

•  Provide curriculum reviews to the faculty and PN Administrator for input.

•  Assist PN Administrator with regular review and evaluation of nursing faculty.

•  Assess faculty turnover and implement programs for improvement.

•  Assists PN Administrator with compiling and assessing results of certification/licensing examinations.

 

 

Position Requirements

 

The Chair must have a minimum of 5 years experience in the practice of nursing as an RN, two of which have been as a faculty member in a program.  The Nursing Chair must hold a current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Indiana.  The Chair must have a baccalaureate degree in nursing. A master’s degree or an earned higher academic or professional degree in nursing is preferred. See Indiana Board of Nursing rules for current regulations.
