Duties And Responsibilities:

 

Perform technical pre-review of submitted protocols for completeness of application, appropriateness of procedures, and compliance with federal regulations regarding appropriateness of animal species, numbers of animals to be used, and search for alternatives to animal use and potentially painful procedures. Facilitate designated reviewer process (disseminate protocols to IACUC members, collect ballots, organize comments, present materials to designated reviewers, etc.) Present completed review materials and correspondence for new and amended protocols and completed annual renewal forms for final approval and obtain IACUC signatures on final approved versions of protocols. Facilitate communication between IACUC members and principal investigators regarding review requirements. Prepare and disseminate annual renewals of animal experimentation protocol forms on a schedule that permits timely renewal. Assist w/organization of IACUC meetings and materials (agenda, dockets, protocols, education materials). Maintain/update animal protocol database and animal experimentation protocol forms. Serve as back-up for other animal research studies personnel in their absence. Assist with annual report data gathering and related duties as required.

 

Required Education, Experience and Skills:

 

Bachelor's degree, preferably in biology or related field. 3 to 5 years experience w/protocol review in IACUC support, preferably in academic setting. Sound knowledge of federal regulations surrounding the use of vertebrate animals in research and teaching. Excellent written and oral communication skills in order to effectively communicate regulatory and review issues to faculty members and senior research staff. Must be highly organized and detail oriented. Proficiency w/PC based MS Word (expert level), Excel, and e-mail software (proficiency w/Access a plus). Willingness and ability to learn new programs. Poise, tact, and ability to maintain confidentiality are essential.
