Public Relations Associate

The Public Relations Associate is responsible for all media relations and external communications activities in the Western US region. Supporting six branch offices the associate will have strong public speaking skills and present at regional offices in California, Arizona, Hawaii and Washington. An experienced communicator will develop, implement and measure a strategic PR plans aligned with the company’s business objectives. In this role, the individual will work to enhance Kumon’s image. The individual will work to research and identify trends, emerging issues and triggers to proactively generate positive media exposure and increase visibility among local, targeted external groups. The associate will work with the Kumon North American PR team in the Torrance, California office. Responsibilities: Research and discover stories, and pitch them to local media. (70% of position) Provide important support and counsel to Kumon Center owners through media training, presentations at monthly Instructor Meetings and one-on-one PR consulting. Support more than 300 Instructors in the western region. Review business plans of new franchisees and provide PR recommendations to improve their new business opening plans. Must have a proactive approach to strategize and execute media relations activities. Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree 2+ years of public relations experience (agency preferred) 2 + years of media relations experience Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with adults and children The ability to develop and edit high-quality written materials, including media correspondence, press releases and key messages. Strong problem solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously Results and client-focused approach and commitment Efficiency in online research and media tracking Experience mitigating and managing media situations and preparing executives for media interviews Must be proficient in Profnet, Burreles, and Bacons Media Research modules Must have a passion for pitching to local community media sources Commitment to making a difference in the community and belief in the importance of education The ability to travel to different states, cities, and center locations independently (35 percent travel) Must have a vehicle for local travel Be a team player, as well as independent thinker and worker Kumon offers a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package.
