RESEARCH ASSISTANT - John Hancock Center

The goal of the John Hancock Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition (JHCPAN) is to develop sound exercise and nutrition programs, influence public policy and promote physical activity and scientifically based nutrition guidelines nationally and internationally. Children in Balance (CIB) is an umbrella organization within the JHCPAN committed to building environments that will promote healthy eating and increase physical activity in children.

The Balance Project, one of Children in Balance’s major research studies, is a two-year control trial that targets 1st-3rd graders and their families. Through a request for application process in Winter 2008, CIB selected six urban communities that are similar in population and community readiness. Three of the selected six communities were randomized to receive the intervention and three were randomized to serve as control communities. CIB will provide the three intervention cities with training, tools, and funding ($300,000 over two years) that will enable them to create an environment that surrounds children with healthier food options and opportunities for active living. Communities randomized to the control group will receive $10,000 and intervention tools, an on-site training, and technical assistance after the two-year intervention is completed.

Under general direction of the Children in Balance Program Director and the Principal Investigator of the Balance Project, the Research Assistant will oversee the Balance Project, a community-based environmental change research control trial aimed at preventing child obesity in culturally diverse, high-risk, early elementary school children in three urban communities. Responsibilities include the following: Overseeing material production, trainings, data collection and analysis; Supervision of students; Assistance with other miscellaneous Children in Balance research and dissemination projects.

Basic Requirements: Master’s degree in nutrition or public health, with at least 2 years of related experience. Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite and SPSS. Valid U.S. driver’s license required.

Preferred Qualifications: Research experience, strong written and oral communication skills, and presentation skills. Community outreach, project management and supervision experience preferred.
