Research Assistant - Spanish & English Bilingual
General Purpose:
Under the supervision of the Project Field Manager, recruit, interview and track women for a research project that involves bringing an HIV/STD prevention intervention to pregnant adolescent women through a group model of prenatal care in 14 Community Health Centers in New York City. The goal of this program is to help young women reduce their risk behaviors and improve their health, and that of their family.
This position is based in New York City. All applicants must be English/Spanish bilingual to be considered.
Position Description: Identify and recruit appropriate patients for the study.Interact with health care providers about patient referrals.Screen patients to see if they meet study criteria and obtain consent.Connect patients with intervention groups.Track patients and set up hand held computer-assisted interviews.Oversee hand held computer-assisted interviews; conduct face-to-face interviews, if necessary. Collect samples for STD testing of participants at 12-month follow up visit.Enter screening data into patient tracking database.Access patient reports in order to contact and track study patients.Assist patients with hand held computer-assisted interviews.Download data to project laptops and transfer to Data Manager.Work with community health center staff to facilitate intervention groups.Attend weekly research team meetings. Prepare interviewing materials.Maintain contact with collaborators at health clinics and universities to answer questions and provide any materials necessary to facilitate recruitment.Provide administrative support and perform miscellaneous tasks (i.e. copying, filing, mailing, correspondence).
Qualifications: Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's Degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's Degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.Experience working with issues of women's health, HIV/AIDS, STDs, teen health, pregnancy and parenting, reproductive health, sex education, sex and gender issues, behavioral health interventions, mental health or working in a research setting. Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Women's Studies, Gender Studies, African American or Ethnic Studies, Public Health, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology or a related field.
Skills and Abilities: Fluent in English and Spanish. Willing to work full-time in New York City. Good verbal skills. Ability to interact comfortably with research, clinical staff and patients.Good with various computer programs and internet. Ability to work independently, as a team member and under direct supervision. Organizational skills.Ability to work with confidential materials.Preferred: Familiarity with database programs (e.g., TrialDB, Access).
