For more information go to http://blink.ucsd.edu/go/cbuDESCRIPTION:The University of California, San Diego, Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) Senior Hazardous Materials Technician works under general supervision and performs such duties as: collecting and maintaining data for Chemical Inventory and Hazardous Materials Business Planning; be able to interpret uniform fire codes, Title 24, and assign hazard classifications to chemicals as well as be able to identify significant risk factors from chemical inventories; collect hazardous waste chemicals, radioactive and biological materials from university labs and facilities, provide assistance to university faculty, researchers, staff and private contractors in matters of accumulation, packaging, storage, labeling and disposal of hazardous materials. Performs lab clean-outs, closures, and lab move while maintaining the ChemCycle program. Perform processing of hazardous waste materials including; segregation, compaction, vial crushing, solidification, recycling/reuse, lab-packing, consolidation, storage for radioactive decay, marking and labeling shipping containers and preparation of shipping documents and transportation. Respond to hazardous spills and chemical emergencies. Assist with hazardous materials clean up.~~ Must be available for overtime call-back.QUALIFICATIONS:* Two years of hazardous waste collection, handling, and disposal experience; a degree in a science-related field, certifications, or undergraduate classes; or a combination of experience and education.* Good oral communication and customer service skills necessary to effectively negotiate hazardous materials management, hazardous waste disposal and relate technical information to a diverse clientele, professional, gracious telephone manner, and demonstrate professional presence.* Demonstrated ability to safely negotiate vehicles around campus and city streets while transporting hazardous materials.
