SIO RADIOACTIVE & HAZMAT SPECIALIST – JOB 45997SHIPBOARD TECHNICAL SUPPORTUNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGOLOCATION: SAN DIEGO, CA 92093Hiring Salary Range: $55,644 - $87,612 / AnnualFull Salary Range: $55,644 - $119,580 / AnnualFull Time Position. Filing Deadline: 05/19/2008 or until filled. DESCRIPTION:The UCSD/SIO Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) Specialist is responsible for the coordination and integration of logistics and use of hazardous and radioactive materials with marine research activities on the Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus and SIO research vessels, and research activities conducted by SIO students, faculty and staff at other locales around the world. The incumbent will liaison with appropriate staff in the UCSD Office of Environment, Health and Safety to insure that the logistics and use of hazardous and radioactive materials by SIO students, faculty and staff on SIO campus and remote research sites, and by other personnel on board SIO research ships is conducted in compliance with all respective UC, local, state, national and international regulations and policies. This position requires acute awareness, assessment and knowledge of continuously evolving and changing domestic and international regulations.QUALIFICATIONS:* Demonstrated skills and knowledge in a broad range of EH&S technical disciplines, e.g. Laboratory safety, biosafety, chemical safety, radiation safety, hazardous waster handling* BS degree in a scientific discipline and four years experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience in the field of radiation and chemical safety.* Proven ability to use computer hardware and software to record and analyze data. Proven ability to use computer hardware and software to generate reports and presentations, and archive documentation.* Demonstrated project management skills to independently initiate, develop and plan work from general conceptual discussions using sound professional judgment* Ability and willingness to respond to emergency situations, even after normal working hours, and to provide effective leadership in resolutions of problems.* Demonstrated knowledge of radiation physics principles, radiation heath issues, and safety and spill cleanup procedures.* Demonstrated knowledge of general chemistry principles, chemical health and safety issues, analytical techniques, chemical compatibility, and spill cleanup procedures.* Demonstrated knowledge of local, state, national and international regulations concerning logistics of radioactive and hazardous materials.* Demonstrated knowledge of industry standards and regulations pertaining to record keeping associated with radioactive and hazardous materials.* Understanding of customer-service and quality performance techniques and procedures and the ability to apply them in achieving quality and customer service goals.* Ability to design and implement training programs knowledge of information and instructional technology and ability to direct their use in the delivery* Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills as required to explain detailed and technical procedures.* Demonstrated ability to exercise professional judgment and to independently manage and operate a major function and organizational program.* Must be willing and able to travel nationally and internationallySPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:* Must have or be able to obtain a valid passport with unlimited U.S. reentry.* Must maintain Dangerous Goods Shipper certifications per CRF49, IATA and IMDG.Excellent benefits that start the first day of hire.Interested applicants, please apply via our Web site at: http://joblink.ucsd.edu/bulletin/job.html?job_id=45997UC San Diego is an Equal Opportunity / Staff Affirmative Action Employer that values a diverse workforce.
