Technical Editor, Gems & Gemology

Information Summary:



The Gemological Institute of America seeks an experienced Technical Editor to facilitate the editing and production of high-quality technical materials for Gems & Gemology, an award-winning professional journal, and other publications issued by that department, working with contributors from within and outside GIA.



Responsibilities:Edits articles and technical Lab Notes, Gem New International entries, and Gemological Abstracts for Gems & Gemology. Works with authors and editors to develop articles and regular features. Interacts with Art Director, authors, and photographers regarding technical illustrations in the journal. Participates in editing the Gems & Gemology in Review monograph series. Organizes and edits the proceedings of the Gemological Research Conference. Edits other technical publications managed by the Gems & Gemology department. Researches and writes articles, news items, and website items. May travel domestically and/or internationally. Directly supervises the work of selected staff members. Communicates effectively, gets along with coworkers and management, and deals with others effectively and professionally under pressure.


 

Requirements:Master's degree (M. A. or M. S.) from four-year college or university required, preferably in Geology, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related field; and four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.Graduate Gemologist diploma preferred.Ability to edit a technical journal.Strong knowledge of English; facility with technical language.Knowledge of gemology and one or more related disciplines, such as geology, physics, and/or chemistry.Strong word processing skills.Excellent organizational skills and ability to multitask.
