The Cornell Center for Technology Enterprise and Commercialization (CCTEC) connects companies and organizations to technological innovations created by Cornell researchers. CCTEC supports faculty at Cornell's main campus in Ithaca, in Geneva and at the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. We are seeking a highly motivated professional to join the Vice Provost/Executive Director and other licensing professionals in the management of a comprehensive intellectual property program for Cornell University. The successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating a portfolio of engineering and physical science inventions in various stages of development, software and other copyright materials developed at Cornell for their technical utility, commercial potential, and available protection under federal and state statutes. Using personal contacts and professional experience, the professional will target potential licensees, negotiate the terms and conditions for the transaction, and draft the necessary legal documents to compete the licensing of Cornell intellectual property rights for commercial development to benefit the public. The individual will act as the primary liaison to the faculty members in engineering and physical science research to assist faculty and research staff in crystallizing their inventive ideas, making disclosure of the inventions, software and other copyrightable materials to the university. Extensive interaction is required with campus researchers, potential licensees, patent and contract attorneys, industrial scientists, senior business development executives, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. Upon the Vice Provost's request, the individual will also represent the center and the campus at professional meetings, technology trade conferences, and investment and economic development meetings and events. The individual will participate in educational and service programs provided by the Cornell Center for Technology Enterprise and Commercialization to the campus community related to intellectual property issues and awareness.
The successful candidate must have a Master's degree in engineering or a physical science discipline with 3-5 years of industry experience or hands-on-technology management in an academic technology transfer office or equivalent combination. A PhD with industry experience in business development or an MBA is highly desirable. strong leadership, planning, research/analytical, organizational, and conceptual skills. a positive and proactive effort when contacting inventors, faculty, staff or students to develop and maintain productive client relationships. the ability to develop and maintain a "user-friendly" reputation for the Center with faculty inventors and industry partners. demonstrated ability to anticipate, perceive, diagnose, prioritize, and remedy problems. proven ability to negotiate reasonable terms and conditions for licensing rights to use technologies with potential licensees. knowledge of licensing and business laws including contract, anti-turst and export control regulations in order to remain in compliance with Cornell policies. strong written, oral and interpersonal skills; excellent networking, marketing, and communication skills. experience and background in computer applications as they relate to the areas of research and industry, including operating knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets and relational database applications.Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
