POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

 

TITLE: Vice President for Finance

REPORTS TO: A Better Chance President

Mission And Purpose

A Better Chance is the oldest and only national organization of its kind working to open up middle and secondary school level (grades 6-12) educational opportunities at the nation’s finest college preparatory schools.  Our mission is to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.

 

Position Summary

The Vice President for Finance will oversee the organization’s financial management and administrative infrastructure.  He/she will implement the policies of the National Board and President in planning, managing and reporting the financial affairs of the organization. 

 Principal Duties and Responsibilities

 

§ Maintain the integrity of the financial control systems for proper financial reporting, budgeting, bill paying, expense reporting, collection of revenues, recording of all financial transactions, and compliance with organization policy and law

 

§ Prepare and monitor the annual budget based on the organization's annual goals and objectives and departmental spending and income plans, grants; coordinate effective reporting process to managers and provide detailed information at Management Team, Finance Committee and National Board meetings as appropriate

 

§ Analyze and interpret fiscal records on a monthly basis: budget/actual reports related to revenue and expense statements, expenditures by department and grant solicitation pending list

 

§ Prepare required reports for the Financial and Audit Committees and National Board

 

§ Manage corporate reporting - statutory and other

 

§ Oversee the investment guidelines and performance of investment managers and identify performance issues

 

§ Negotiate/renew corporate insurance policies for Directors and Officers, Professional Liability, general liability accident, and umbrella policies

 

§ Maintain compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and assist Auditors in carrying out annual and A-133 financial audits

 

§ Oversee payroll, payroll taxes and payroll reporting 

 

§ Ensure that technology and information systems appropriate to the organization’s mission and operation are in place and that the overall system infrastructure is rational, and cost-effective

 

§ Oversee office administration and maintenance

 

§ Undertake special projects as directed by the President

 

 

Required Qualifications

 

§ Bachelor's Degree, formal education in accounting and CPA required.   MBA preferred or demonstrated equivalent in education and experience

 

§ Ten years in an accounting/ senior financial management position for an organization with assets greater than $5.0 million

 

§ Thorough understanding of nonprofit accounting, bookkeeping and financial management information requirements

 

§ Knowledge and experience with fund accounting systems and internal control requirements

 

§ Experience with grant and financial reporting requirements for pertinent funding sources and regulatory agencies

 

§ Ability to analyze, interpret and communicate financial statements, budgets and forecasts



§ Demonstrated oral and written communication skills

 

§ Ability to think strategically and manage multiple projects and tasks successfully

 

§ Ability to work as part of a team and to delegate responsibility

 

§ Prior experience managing and motivating a department staff of at least 3 people

 

§ Proficiency in the use of information technology (Windows office environment - word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, accounting systems [Financial Edge/Raiser’s Edge preferred)

 

§ Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality

 

§ Commitment to understanding the mission, goals and culture of A Better Chance
