Reopened to: 05/30/2008 or until filled *** Approximate two year assignment with the possibility of extension dependent upon the availability of funding.DESCRIPTION: Under supervision of the Web Services Manager and as a member of the Web Services Team, the incumbent performs moderately complex development and integration services in support of the UCSD Libraries’ web infrastructure. These services are critical to the development and maintenance of the libraries’ websites and the development of an efficient digital asset management system dictated by UCSD Libraries’ strategic direction #1. Designs, codes, tests, debugs, and documents custom client-server applications and various open source applications using technologies such as Java, XML, XSL, Perl, CGI, SQL, XHTML, and JavaScript among other web programming languages.Designs and develops a User Interface (UI) for the new digital objects management system (DAMS) using technologies such as AJAX, XForms, XML, SQL, and Java in combination with a solid understanding of the DAMS underlying system architecture and the underlying database models. Utilizes efficient SQL queries to manipulate and display DAMS related data. Evaluates, installs, and configures moderately complex third party (commercial and/or open source) software applications in a UNIX environment. Programs and tests Vignette portal components and JSR 168 compliant portlets using Java standards, Vignette JSP tag libraries, and XSL.Recommends software packages for use in website graphic design and webpage code generation. Develops and maintains written documentation for technician and operation procedures, simplification of user access and use, application design and development. Provides user support and collaborates with process stakeholders and end-users of systems to understand goals and objectives of development work.QUALIFICATIONS:* Demonstrated knowledge of web programming, including substantial experience with web scripting and markup languages such as XHTML, JavaScript, CGI, Perl, CSS, XML and XSL. Proven ability to develop web applications across various platforms and browsers.* Demonstrated programming experience in J2EE technologies and Java/JSP and programming experience in Perl. Proven ability to learn other languages as needed and proven experience in using these languages in conjunction with databases such as SQL and Oracle to generate dynamic Web content.* Working knowledge of Unix (Solaris, Linux, HP/UX, BSD) and understanding of UNIX file structure and navigation commands, and the ability to write moderately complex scripts with programming languages such as Shell, Perl, and/or CGI.* Demonstrated strong interpersonal, written, and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to express ideas effectively, to seek and respect the opinions of others, and to actively listen and share ideas.PREFERRED:* Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.* Demonstrated experience with technical documentation. Ability to document and communicate repeatable processes for building, archiving, installing, and configuring custom and third-party software applications.
