Component Engineer
The position will be located in Raleigh, NC and will require a period of a several weeks training with engineering teams in Uniontown, PA and/or Santa Barbara, CA.
Responsibilities:
Part selection guidance, reliability experiment design, mathematical modeling, circuit analyses, supplier qualification,Company compliance for parts, data / paper qualification review, End-of-Life part substitution, Sustaining engineering from the component engineering duties as required by the particular program.Plans design layouts with regard to component specifications, select major components, assure conformance to functional and operating requirements, and determine the optimum location and arrangement from an engineering, manufacturing and maintainability standpoint.Confer with vendors to discuss physical and performance characteristics of proposed parts, components, and equipment for application to specific designs. Interface with manufacturers and suppliers of components, proactively and reactively addressing issues including availability, nonconformance, and cost. Participate in manufacturer / supplier surveys and audits as needed for technical and quality support.Assist in defining and maintain processes and requirements needed to manage components from new introduction through obsolescence.Studies the basic design ideas and methods of approach proposed by other engineering personnel: consults available technical data, analyzes previous design, utilizes specialized knowledge, and proposes improvements or modifications to the basic design ideas and layouts which would be more effective and involve less risk.Provide support for organizations across embedded systems for component related issues that range from new introductions through obsolescence.Perform MTBF calculations and generate MTBF reliability reports.Participate in the engineering change notice (ECN) process as an initiator and reviewer of change orders addressing component related issues including new component introductions, component temporary deviations, and second sourcing.Identify, select, make recommendations, and perform qualification of new components based on key technical parameters, cost, availability, and/or reliability.Keep abreast of emerging component solutions and availability.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE DEALING WITH SILICON VENDORSRequires B.S. degree in engineering, physics or in a technical area of science and research with 4-8 years work experience or a MS degree with 1-5 years experience. Minimum 3 years as a Component Engineer, Design Engineer, Sustainability Engineer or Reliability Engineer.Component engineering position experience with specific application in embedded systems.An understanding of basic electronics, applied physics, probability and statistics required. An understanding of radiation effects on electronics and semiconductor physics is an asset Direct Experience with analog, RF / high frequency design, signal integrity, and EMI considerations, obsolescence and EOL issues, schematics, MTBF calculations, ISO 9001 quality systems, embedded computing applications, regulatory compliance testing and reports, test equipment such as HF scopes, logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers Knowledge of Relex, Promiere, or other component EOL / reliability software Good written and verbal communication skills, including communication of technical information Thoroughly familiar with key components and suppliers used in embedded systems
