DIGITAL VIDEO PROCESSING RESEARCHER

Advanced Video and Display Technologies Department is an R&D department funded partly by major Sharp business groups and partly by Sharp corporate research. The research agenda of the department includes refinement and commercialization of core technologies (mainly algorithms) that are being developed by the department itself, and longer term research projects for future products. Various algorithms developed by the department are implemented in various AQUOS TV and mobile products.

Current research is focused on very high high-quality communication and display of video on LCD TV and mobile LCD devices with significant power and cost efficiency. Emphasis areas include super efficient and low-complexity coding of high resolution, high dynamic range video; robust video streaming to display devices; data compression/decompression for memory and data bandwidth efficient display systems, up-conversion and resolution enhancement algorithms for 4K and higher resolution displays; video processing and backlight control algorithms for enabling very high dynamic range displays and power-efficient displays; gamut expansion algorithms for natural color rendition on wide color gamut displays; automatic visual inspection algorithms and systems for display manufacturing, and human visual system modeling.

One future direction of the group is development of technologies enabling super-realistic large flat panel displays, tiled or "wall size" displays, including development of algorithms for super-reality picture quality, power and cost efficiency, as well as algorithms that enable viewers experience the realism of "being there" by merging the displayed appearance with the environment. Another related research goal is to discover new applications of such displays and develop their enabling technologies, e.g., new user-display-environment interaction methods that enable the realism as well as enabling users to conveniently interact with such displays. Processing and rendering of audio accordingly is a natural component of this new realism.

We are looking for an outstanding researcher with solid background and algorithm development experience in Digital Video Processing and Analysis, especially in spatiotemporal approaches to enhancement, restoration, up-conversion and super resolution. We require high-quality publications and/or a proven record of solving important practical problems in these and related areas.

The position requires a Ph D degree in a related field of engineering or science, or an MSc with outstanding R&D credentials. Excellent C/C++ and MATLAB programming skills are required. We strongly prefer candidates who have prior experience in hardware and FPGA-friendly algorithm development.
