Job Description:
The position requires at least 3 years of experience in analog and digital electronics, wireless communication, software/firmware development, mechanical hardware system engineering, innovative technology development, and all aspects of field deploying new technologies in ruggedized and/or marine environments or an equivalent combination of education and experience in these areas. Both independently and in collaboration with project teams, this position will lead the electronics development, sensor integration and deployment for a range of U.S. government and private clients. This position will lead the development, integration, testing and deployment of instruments and sensors. This position requires experience in developing and specifying testing methods both in the laboratory and in the field.
Additional skills include experience in interfacing with customers, project managers and staff, excellent oral and written communications, and experience in meeting critical project milestones. Required attributes include strong interpersonal skills, initiative, the ability to collaborate effectively on diverse teams, creative and innovative thinking. The position is responsible for the delivery of hardware systems to the clients that meet specific performance and functional requirements. The position is also responsible for integrating and networking within staff expertise in Richland. Responsibilities will include interfacing with scientists and clients to explore how electronics/sensors could be integrated into their research, define the sensor/technology requirements, identify and assemble the appropriate team, management of projects and/or technical tasks, completing the engineering design of unique one-of-a kind systems, managing the fabrication activities, designing the interfaces between the electronic devices and the electrical and mechanical systems, creating the integrated engineering package and documenting the systems operation and performance.
Duties will also include contributing to or developing proposals for new projects or business opportunities and targeting technical areas such as sensor and electronics for ruggedized and/or marine environments, homeland security, and national defense. Additional duties may include documentation of engineering developments and new technologies through publications of internal and external reports, technical journal publications, and technical presentations.
Minimum Requirements:
Placement level will be dependent upon management's assessment of the selected candidate's skills, experience, and ability to contribute.
Level II:
- Technical Expertise: Contributing professional who is building a professional reputation for technical expertise. Fully applies and interprets standard theories, principles, methods, tools and technologies within specialty.
- Level of Responsibility: Independently completes recurring assignments. Exercises limited judgment on work details. Makes preliminary selections and adaptations of technical alternatives.
- Breadth of Technical Knowledge: Continues developing technical expertise and knowledge. Develops new skills.
-Minimum Education Requirement: BS 2-3 years experience, MS 0-2 years experience, PhD 0 years experience in designing, developing and testing electronics and electro-mechanical systems for a variety of sensor and technology platforms.
Level III:
- Technical Expertise: Skilled professional. Applies, on a broad basis, existing theories, principles, and concepts to a specialty field.
- Level of Responsibility: Fully competent in all conventional applications of knowledge common in the specific discipline and function of work assigned. Principle Investigator (PI) or Co-PI on projects or tasks.
-Breadth of Technical Knowledge: Proactively stays abreast of developments in industry and maintains skills consistent with state of the art.
-Minimum Education Requirement: BS 5 years experience, MS 3+ years experience, PhD 1-2 years experience in Electrical Engineering and at least 5 years of experience in designing, developing and testing electronics and electro-mechanical systems for a variety of sensor and technology platforms.
Both Levels:
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Security clearance (to obtain a clearance requires U.S. Citizenship)
Qualifications:
Must meet minimum requirements to receive further consideration.
Other Information:
Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B. All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs for 12 consecutive months can be demonstrated.
In order to reduce cycle time, internal and external solicitations of interest will run concurrently; however, qualified PNNL staff will be given first consideration.
