Job Responsibilities:
SUSTAINING FIRMWARE ENGINEER
Maintain firmware support for complex single phase output UPS systems built by APC (Symmetra LX, Symmetra Hydra, SURT20KVA). These products contain multiple sub-systems, processors . and communication interfaces configured to provide highly reliable operation in a real-time environment. The position requires reading, understanding, documenting and modifying existing firmware. The job requires the candidate to respond to customer inquiries about product operation in a timely manner, switch between many concurrent activities and manage the expectations of customers (external and internal). Candidate will be expected to work effectively in a small team environment with hardware support engineers. Required skills include hands-on testing with UPS equipment to duplicate and understand customer problem statements and determine appropriate work-arounds, and/or changes to system design when required. Needs to be able to make decisions based on the best "business" decision, balancing customer satisfaction with the cost of making changes. Candidate will be using existing APC systems to document problems (7-Step problem solving), as well as Issue Tracking systems (Jira). Candidate will need to navigate databases and source control documents to retrieve appropriate information about product operation and design approaches.
The candidate will also be responsible for interfacing with global manufacturing teams to help solve manufacturing issues as they arise with the product. Development of automated engineering test software using LabView is a secondary responsibility of the position. LabView training will be provided if needed.
This position requires working with multiple microprocessor models and manufacturers, including Microchip PIC16, PIC17, TI TMS320F,C6000 series 8051, Philips XA, and others. Good communication skills are required.
This position requires a highly motivated independent person who has the perseverance to understand existing systems with incomplete documentation, working with multiple disciplines of technology experts as well as customers. BS/MSEE with 0 to 5 years experience with embedded control systems firmware that contain real time and interrupt driven applications. The following skills are required:
· C Programming, (Structured, well documented code), · Assembly programming · Demonstrated ability with development tools including Emulators, IDE, and Version Control Software · Good documentation and communication skills to communicate firmware implementations to non-firmware engineers · Good software development practices are required. · Independent self-motivated worker · Labview skills (desireable)
Additionally the successful candidate should be able to work in a dynamic environment; work within a team or independently; and be results oriented and customer focused.. Good estimation skills and timely delivery of completed code is required. Travel as required. Salary and Title will be commensurate with skills and experience.
