Regular,Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Schoolof Ocean and Earth Science andTechnology (SOEST), Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research(JIMAR), located at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), PacificIslands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent uponprogram/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and availability offunds. Minimum Monthly Salary: $2,607.00. Duties: Works with the CoralReef Ecosystem Division’s (CRED) multi-disciplinary program to support marineecosystem research and conservation efforts throughout the U.S. Pacific. Works with the sponsor to provide electronicstechnical support, in the lab and in the field, to a variety of scientists andresearch programs. Develops, designs,specifies, procures, installs, configures, maintains, modifies, relocates,reconfigures, troubleshoots, and repairs a variety of electro-mechanicalequipment, software and peripherals utilized for marine ecosystem research andmonitoring. Uses basic and specializedtest equipment to diagnose and analyze difficulties. Participates in research cruises as a memberof the Oceanography and Instrumentation Team and provides technical support formonitoring systems and field instrumentation. Required to participate in field activities for up to 60 days per year(but possibly more). Develops andmaintains performance, maintenance, and technical documentation (records) onequipment and procedures, as well as end-user support documents. MinimumQualifications: Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four(4) year college or university in Electrical Engineering or related field thatincludes a strong background inelectronics (Associate’s Degreefrom an accredited community college in Electrical Engineering Technology,Electronics or equivalent and an additional one to three (1-3) years ofrelevant work experience may substitute for a Bachelor’s Degree). Experience: One to three (1-3) years of experience in electrical engineering, electronics, orrelated work. Abil/Know/Skills: Working knowledge of electronics, instrumentation,and measurement systems. Basic knowledge of the engineering design process.Basic knowledge of analog and digital circuits. Working knowledge andunderstanding of good laboratory practices. Ability to read, interpret, and create engineering documents anddrawings. Ability to read electronicschematics. Proficiency in soldering. Ability to utilize a variety of hand and power tools. Troubleshooting skills for electrical andcircuit board problems including the use of basic lab tools to troubleshootdown to the component level. Proficiencywith using basic office productivity software tools, including word processors,databases, and spreadsheets. Mustpossess excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability totransfer technical knowledge to appropriately written material. Ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks. Ability to work independently under minimalsupervision, and on teams tasked with multiple and frequent deadlines. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must meet US Department of Commerce (DOC),National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration security requirements forworking in a federal facility which includes being fingerprinted and having afederal background check performed. Physical/MedicalRequirements: Must be able to obtainNOAA Medical Clearance for embarking/working on NOAA research vessels or otherappropriate vessels which includes providing proof of required immunizationsand/or obtaining the necessary immunizations as required by NOAA Marine andAviation Operations. Ability to work long hours outdoors at various captivefacilities and remote locations with high exposure to sunlight, aboard researchvessels and aboard small boats (15-20’) in coastal and oceanic waters. Duties may require physical exertion,including reaching, carrying and lifting scientific equipment, up to 50 pounds.Ability to remain at sea for extended periods of time. Must be willing totravel to assist in field equipment installation, performance testing, and/orservice. Desirable Qualifications: Knowledgeof computer programming languages. Experience with relational databases such asMicrosoft Access. Familiarity with computer based drafting programs such asAutoCAD, Pro-E or similar software. Ability to evaluate hardware and softwaredesigns and determine possible failure modes. Advanced open water SCUBA divingcertification and experience. Experiencewith marine products and equipment, and oceanographic instrumentation.Familiarity with the use of a wiki to create collaborative content.
