Optical Scientist

SUMMARY:

Responsible for the development and productization of next-generation metrology for spectrally narrowed Excimer laser systems.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Having broad expertise or unique knowledge, uses skills to contribute to development of company objectives and principles and to achieve goals in creative and effective ways.Assume “Engineering Responsibility” for optical component and subassembly test development, data acquisition, analysis, and reporting.Develop mathematical models to simulate spectral content of line narrowed excimer lasers and optical module performance, specifically spectral metrology modules..Generate optical module or system concepts to meet product requirements.Validate concepts through breadboard builds and analysis.Detailed optical design, optical component layout, and ray tracing for new or improved optical subsystems desired.Work with Mechanical Engineers and CAD Designers for prototype and pilot detailed designDesign verification testing of prototypes.

 

QUALIFICATIONS  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Demonstrated creativity in solving complex optical design problems.Optical engineering principles.Experience with grating spectrometers and etalon spectrometers.Strong background in analysis of systematic errors and noise effects in precision optical metrology applications, especially wavelength and bandwidth measurements.Strong background in mathematical methods, especially in deconvolution of spectral lineshapes.Experience using Optical Design Software (Oslo, Zemax, Code 5, etc.) desired.Experience with Product Development tasks desired: bills of material, interfacing with vendors, procurement of material for prototyping, change management.Written and oral communication.Ability to work either independently or as part of a development team.Self-motivation, and ability to work in a fast-moving high-tech environment.  Occasional travel within and outside the US may be required.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Ph.D in Physics, Optics, or related Engineering discipline. A lower degree plus equivalent experience will also be considered.Experience with product development desired.Experience with Excimer Lasers desired.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing duties, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; may read and interpret data, information and documents; observe and respond to people and situations; learn and apply new information or skills; work under deadlines; and interact with others encountered in the course of work.  The employee works under manufacturing or laboratory environments, and the noise level is usually high. The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, use hands to finger, handle or feel.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must be able to put together mechanical assemblies including lifting 25 lbs from floor to shoulder height. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Work with excimer lasers with possible noisy environments (ear protection required) and potential radiation hazards (eye and skin protection required).
