Senior Application Engineer

BASIC JOB DESCRIPTION:

Application Engineering consists of coordinating with the marketing, sales and engineering teams to ensure engineered products comply with the customer’s needs. 


Under limited direction, perform a variety of complex engineering assignments requiring in-depth knowledge of a specific engineering discipline plus an understanding of related disciplines to cost effectively achieve objectives. Assignments typically require the use of advanced and innovative techniques. Proactively seek and implement initiatives to improve operations and increase customer satisfaction.

Typical duties/responsibilities for engineering may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Design, analyze, and evaluate systems, products or components, requiring a high degree of technical expertise.  Work from instructions, drawings, proposals, specifications, and other pertinent information.  Effectively record minutes from customer visits and communicate the customers needs to appropriate functional departments within the Company.

 

Research, collect and report information on the ability and capacity of company products and competing equipment.

 

Design and develop equipment and systems or redesign existing equipment to fulfill the needs of customers. Ensures projects are completed on time and within budget.

 

Prepare specifications and related documents in accordance with requirements, established formats and general instructions. Review and analyze a variety of engineering data, documents and reports.

Investigate technical problems, develop solutions and prepare related recommendations and reports.  Assist in the development of corrective actions to avoid recurrences.

Conduct economic studies and prepare or lead the preparation of specifications, proposals for contracts, licensing and safety documents, and obtain required approvals.

 

Consult with other engineering personnel to ensure that specified engineering criteria are suitable for the proposed application, and recommend revisions, as appropriate.

 

Familiar with a variety of products within ABB USCON and how the products are used in the field. Understands and applies excellent design practices, and procedures.

 

Interact with customers to resolve significant technical issues and develop related action plans.

Represent the group in meetings and conferences such as IEEE and NEMA.

 

Requires approximately 30% travel, domestically.  Occasional international travel is required.
 

COMPLEXITY OF TASKS:
Requires a general understanding of the group's operations in order to provide effective engineering support. Requires ability to communicate effectively and resolve routine problems.

 

Requires thorough knowledge of a specific engineering discipline plus an understanding of related disciplines to coordinate activities, analyze and resolve problems crossing disciplines. Technical input, recommendations and decisions may impact the organization's effectiveness and customer relations.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Power Engineering plus 5 to 8 years of experience.

 

Requires the ability to interface effectively with customers.  Timely resolution to customer needs is essential.

This position requires excellent engineering and design skills. The ability to interpret changes in customer’ design and product requirements, anticipate and evaluate competitors’ products is also critical in this position. 

 

Requires a broad knowledge of Company products and ability to develop and manage timelines around customer projects and expectations.

 

Project management skills are required.

 

Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Microsoft Project.
